The company said revenue rose 13 percent, or $453 million, compared with the period a year earlier, but was lower than the $675 million analysts predicted.

A. or $453 million, compared with the period a year earlier, but was lower than the $675 million analysts predicted.
B. an amount equal to $453 million, in comparison to that period last year, but was lower than the $675 million analysts predicted.
C. or $453 million, compared with the period a year earlier, but was lower than the $675 million analysts had predicted.
D. $453 million, from the period a year earlier, but was lower than the $675 million analysts had predicted.
E. or $453 million, compared with the period a year earlier, but lower than the $675 million analysts predicted.

Step 1: Understand what the question says. The company said revenue rose 13% which is equivalent to 453$ million ...
Step 2: Look for splits. 'predicted' and 'had predicted' are the easy splits.
Step 3: Eliminate. Based on step 1, we can eliminate A, C and E. They change the meaning. According to these options, Company's revenue rose by 13% or company's revenue rose by 453$ million. This is not the intended meaning.
Based on step 2, we can eliminate A, B and E. 'said' and 'had predicted' (simple past and past perfect) complement each other by clearly stating the sequence of actions

D remains.

Hi,

Isn't option D actually missing an "or" before $453 million? I am guessing option D should have been

D. or $453 million, from the period a year earlier, but was lower than the $675 million analysts had predicted.

Without this "or" the "$453 million"(which is not a clause) is awkwardly placed between 2 commas. Any thoughts?

Wow. Thank you pqhai! Wonderful explanation. Kudos!

Edit: Looking back, I think I was confused because the question should have underlined the comma after "13 percent" also, no?

in D, the correct answer, "from the period a year earlier" work ad adverb or adjective. if it is adverb, which is its modified clause. if it workd ad adjective, which is its noun

please, explain

Hello HKHR

I'm happy to help.

D omits the "or" 100% correctly because:

(1) Please note that there is a comma before "or" --> Technically, we don't use a comma that way. For example:
CORRECT: 1 meter equals 100 cm OR 1000 mm.
WRONG: 1 meter equals 100 cm, OR 1000 mm.

(2) D uses appositive phrase which is a noun or noun phrase that renames another noun right beside it. Thus, we don't need "OR" anymore.
For example:
CORRECT: Earth, the only planet in our galaxy known to support life, is sometimes called the third rock from the sun.
WRONG: Earth, OR the only planet in our galaxy known to support life, is sometimes called the third rock from the sun.

Hope it helps a bit.

Thanks for the explanation, +1 kudos.

However, based on the above, is it correct to say:

1 meter equals 100 cm, 1000 mm?

What is the structure of this sentence ?

The company said

( That start)
revenue (Subject) rose (verb) 13 percent, $453 million, from the period a year earlier, but (coordinating conjunction) (revenue) was lower than the $675 million
(That ends)

analysts had predicted.

=========

The company said (blah blah blah $675 million) analyst had predicted.

I am not able to understand the role of "analyst had predicted" is it a clause or modifier, if a clause then how can we place it without and conjunction.

Kindly help to simplify the structure.

Hi Piyush
I will give it a shot
Just take the clause after but "X was lower than Y" where X is revenue correctly paralled to "675 Million" and the 675 million is modified by "analysts had predicted".
Hope it makes sense.

Hey, Thanks for the response, but under which category you will keep this modifier.

I could have used "675 million predicted by analyst" ed modifier .

Modifier "analysts had predicted" looks like a clause. I have never seen a clause modifying a noun.

Could you please explain it with some common example.

this one looks scary, but once you understand the meaning...it is very easy to narrow down to the correct answer.
first of all - the company said...then we have analysts predicted. was the prediction before the company said smth about the revenue? Definitely. Thus, we need a past perfect to show the sequence of events.
A/B/E - out.

the revenue rose from last year - otherwise it is illogical.
the revenue rose, but was lower...

A - compares revenue with the period so not good. tense error as mentioned above.
B - 13% is 453 million or the revenue 453 million? ambiguous here.. THAT period - demonstrative pronoun - what role does it have? tense error as mentioned.
C -compares revenue wth the period.
D - seems good.
E - revenue compared with the period. tense error.

--
error - revenue compared with period - A, C , E - are out
B - "in comparison to that period last year" - even if "that" refers to revenue , we are saying - "in comparison to revenue period last year" - doesn't make sense.
D is the correct answer
--
A. or $453 million, compared with the period a year earlier, but was lower than the $675 million analysts predicted.
B. an amount equal to $453 million, in comparison to that period last year, but was lower than the $675 million analysts predicted.

A – wrong tense has been applied
B – same as A
C – modifier issue in ‘compared with’
D – correct
E – same as A

D is right

VERITAS PREP OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

Solution: D

Explanation: In this problem, you need to make sure that the comparisons are logical and correct. Also, the past perfect is preferred (but not obligatory) to make it clear that the prediction took place before the company “said” In (A),(B), (C), and (E) the comparison is imprecise and illogical. The goal is to show that the revenue rose 13 % from the figure before. You cannot say “it rose 13% in comparison to/with a period” It rose 13% in comparison to the increase or figure in the period before. Only (D) avoids this problem, as it is not making a comparison: it says that it rose 13% from the period a year earlier and uses the past perfect. Answer is (D).

Hi,
I struggled a bit with this one but got it right. Here is what I did.
1. There is a clear 3:2 split considering "predicted" vs "had predicted". Since the prediction happened before the actual rise. A,B & E are out.
2. The figure "$453 million" is just a description of what 13 percent is. So "$453 million," is better than "or $453 million,", since its a non-essential modifier.
3. the revenue rose 13 percent from vs the revenue rose 13 percent compared with

A. or $453 million, compared with the period a year earlier, but was lower than the $675 million analysts predicted.
B. an amount equal to $453 million, in comparison to that period last year, but was lower than the $675 million analysts predicted.
C. or $453 million, compared with the period a year earlier, but was lower than the $675 million analysts had predicted.
D. $453 million, from the period a year earlier, but was lower than the $675 million analysts had predicted. Correct
E. or $453 million, compared with the period a year earlier, but lower than the $675 million analysts predicted.

D. $453 million, from the period a year earlier, but was lower than the $675 million analysts had predicted.
E. or $453 million, compared with the period a year earlier, but lower than the $675 million analysts predicted.

In this question above, i worked with elimination. Since we are comparing the 'rise of revenue' with period in A, B, C & E, hence straight away eliminated them. Left is D.
