Do one year and two year MBA receive same diploma?

On a lot of school's websites they talk about how their one-year MBA students receive the same education as the two-year students with the only difference being the opportunity to partake in a summer internship. There is no mention what degree is actually earned.

Are different degrees earned? Will both diploma say "Master of Business Administration" or will the one-year program say something else like "Accelerated Master of Business Administration"?

Hey there,

That can vary by program but, by and large, the top programs that offer a 1 year and 2 year program don't require different denotations when it comes to your resume. That's most common. But there are always exceptions. Which schools are you considering?

Thanks. I noticed that at Cornell for example 2-year MBA students are listed as "MBA" and 1-year MBA are listed as "AMBA". I have a feeling I will be encouraged by schools to consider their 1-year programs but I don't want a diploma that makes a distinction and probably will not consider 1-year programs if they distinguish between programs.

Hey there,

So that's a great point - it might help to distinguish between what a school records and what you report. So on a transcript, almost all programs will denote, in SOME way, that you attended the 1 year program. They have to for their own records purpose. If they didn't, that would just be really confusing. However, externally (i.e. resume), most don't require it. Cornell, for example, doesn't require it. This is directly from their website:

Quote:
Q: Is your One-Year MBA recognized as equivalent to a two-year MBA?

A: Yes. In fact, we offer four ways to earn a Cornell MBA. The differences among our MBA programs reflect the varying backgrounds and needs of the students. All result in a rigorous general management education that prepares MBAs for leadership roles.


So even though the school will record it as an AMBA or 1-year or whatever, what you report will still just list a Masters from Cornell. Similar to part time or weekend programmers, for instance. No one on a resume states, "Part-Time MBA from School X" - that would be just as awkward as if someone wrote "2-Year Full Time MBA from School X".

Thanks. I saw that on the website and found it a bit vague (which caused my original post). Call me old fashioned but I will stick to the traditional 2 yr programs :)

They do not distinguish. It's the same MBA degree.

I haven't looked at every school, but the ones I have looked at offer exactly the same degree for full-time, part-time, 1Y, and Executive programs - "MBA".
