Re: A recent study has found that withtin the past few years, [#permalink]
I would go E.

retire and face should be in parellel since they both are verb.
Also the the sentence in about recent study means it is in the present and nowhere it is indicated the doctors retiring has ended.. hence Have is corrrect ..

Thanks.

One more for E.

Retiring seems to indicate that the doctors are still in the process of retiring. They should have elected to retire before the study shows the information right? So present perfect is right here.

a. had elected early retirement rather than face
b. had elected early retirement instead of facing
c. have elected retiring early instead of facing
d. have elected to retire early rather than facing
e. have elected to retire early rather than face

I like E

ll to retire . . [to] face. and present perfect is correct.

the "to" is understood and not explicitly written.

C is incorrect b/c

"rather" is used to compare verbs and also for preference

"instead" is used for nouns and primarily to denote replacement.

Sorry. Go for E.

elect to do sth is an idiom. and the missing to is ellipsis.

(E) for multiple reasons:

1. doctors... have... correct SV
2. to retire ... (to) face ... parallel and correct use of ellipsis
3. rather than is almost always favored over instead of when comparing actions
4. actively phrased
