This book, in addition to Built to Last, is one of the best books out there on great companies and what makes them great.
Jim Collins profiles a select group of companies carefully chosen for their consistent and outstanding performance. Jim, along with his team , present a lot of data in support of their conclusions and this is what seperates this book from the regular " opinion column" type books. You could study the data and draw similar conclusions as Jim does.
He introduces a new idea of leadership: Level 5 Leadership. this type of leadership is an innate characterstic of all the GREAT companies. He also makes a striking observation; All level 5 leaders are modest, maintain a low profile and shun publicity. The fact that GREAT companies have modest leaders directly opposes our conventional belief that a leader should be aggressive and should have great PR skills.
There are always a group of companies that do significantly better than their competition. Jim Collins, intrigued by this thought , set out to find out what exactly makes a good company great? And his comprehensive research shows what effective leadership can do to a good company. CEO's of "great" companies never rest on their laurels and are always pushing harder to take their companies to the edge of greatness. CEO's of "good" companies do not take this important step and are thus often left behind by competition.
I highly recommend this book. Good To Great is not a personal opinion of leadership, but one that bases its conclusions on actual data.
Praetorian's Recommendation: 5/5</td></tr></table>
