well, it's actually 14% (which isn't that much higher) because Berkeley's yield is roughly 50%.

Only 50% yield at Berkeley? Is that b/c everyone's also applying to Stanford and UCLA who applies to Haas?

probably... but Kellogg only has a 57-62% yield in the past few years. Most TOP schools have only a 60-70% yield. Harvard is 90, Stanford is 80, and Wharton is 75 or so. All the others are quite low because people who apply to the top 7-15 schools will also apply to 4-5 more other equivalent schools. Just look at us here in GMATClub. :)

If everyone who applies to 5 top schools get into all 5, then by definition the yield for those schools will all be around 20%. Generally people get into 2-3 top schools, and with "yield management" (Why this School questions and waitlists) techniques, most schools have a 50-70% yield.

This is my rough guess at the yields of the top 15 schools, based on BW 2003 book and their online stats from 2006.

HBS: 90
Stan: 80
Wharton: 75
Chicago, Kellogg, MIT, Columbia: 60-70
Elite Schools: 50-60

And that's the *average* yield... so if you combine the whole GMAT score and acceptance rate math that rhyme and pelihu did (it's stickied), the chances for many of us are slightly better than the regular acceptance rate, that is, if we submit a good application. :-D

Explain to me the last paragraph. Why would you combine the GMAT score and acceptance rate to get a higher yield? Wouldnt you have already factored that when making the initial yield calculations?

sorry I wasn't clear. I meant that the listed yields are averaged over all GMAT scores. As rhyme and pelihu showed, the yield for people with 750+ GMAT scores is probably much lower than 50%, since they're probably applying to equivalent or "better" schools to reduce the risk. And thus with the lower yields for the higher GMAT score people, the acceptance rate will go up higher than 14% at Haas.

There's a couple logical steps I didn't elaborate there and I apologize about that.

For your information. Chicago is the only top 15 school that doesn't report the yield... but the guess is roughly 65%

https://www.businessweek.com/bschools/06/full_time.htm

HBS: 90
Stan: 80
Wharton: **70** (probably because anyone who applies there usually applies to H/S)
Columbia: 79! (probably because of ED)
Chicago, Kellogg, MIT: 57-70
Elite Schools: 45-64 (with Ross at 64%, the rest were 45-50%)

Thanks for the great breakdown kryzak. Among those schools I'm only planning on applying to Haas (and Duke/UNC might also be in the elite group?), so hopefully I'll get 3 admits and then be able to contribute to those yield numbers.

Even with my solid score I am still plenty scared by that 14% number. This process is making me paranoid.

this may make you feel a little bit better?

Feel free to try to reverse engineer Berkeley's numbers if you like ;)

I talked with the admissions officer for the MIT LMF/MBA program. She said their yield for that program is 90% or so and other specialized programs like MIT's entrepreneurship one typically have very high yields.

During the presentation tonight MIT has a class 17 people larger than expected because their yield was better than they had hoped for. With that in mind its probably going to be tougher this year and also the waitlist doesn't provide much hope.

Well, Haas uses the waitlist to manage its yield... 50% of the people on the waitlist get off...

Slight change in my plans. Stan moves to R2 (So that I don't have to compete with kryzak directly). Guys, please update this thread as your plans change. It'll be interesting to see who applied where in the end.

LOL! Yay, two fewer tough competitions! ;)

Here's my final R1 schools:

Stanford, Haas, UCLA

R2 still in flux, but considering:
Kellogg, Chicago

Now we almost completely overlap, great

R1
Haas, Ross

R2
Chicago, UCLA, Stanford, Harvard

Its hard to get back into the daily 8-10 hours of work and 4 hours of essays after traveling Europe for 3 weeks.
