(B) at once as many changes as they were with

ans = D ...

A) wrong tense ''changed'' hence changes the menaing...
B) tampers the structure of the sentence also ''with'' does not suit herr..

C) perfectly right except for the use of ''confronted'' which gets redundant when compared with D ...

E) unidioamtic... so many ...as may =wrong...

D ) rides well... with idiomatic expression as many ...as

also is precise and clearer...

I think it's D.

A & E - are out: correct idiom = 'as many... as'
C - too wordy, 'confronted in' makes the sentence too long and doesn't necessarily add to meaning
B - can't really explain, it's just weird - doesn't sound right

Anothe issue is had/did. Some might find A appealing because the use of 'had exporters confronted.... they had' sounds parallel. But it's wrong, also because of the tenses.

1. Exporters had confronted [Past Perfect] many changes before 1990.
2. In 1990 exporters confronted [simple past] more changes than before.

Sentence #1 takes place before sentence #2.

Never before had exporters confronted as many changes at once as they did in the WTO Agreement of 1990.

For the "A" takers, here is an excerpt from American Heritage Dictionary:

<B>as … as versus so … as. A traditional usage rule draws a distinction between comparisons using as … as and comparisons using so … as. The rule states that the so … as construction is required in negative sentences (as in Shakespeare’s “’tis not so deep as a wellâ€

Will go with D

reasons:
(A) "changed" is wrong
(B) at once as many changes as they were with - WRONG
(C) as many changes at once as they confronted in - redundant, WRONG
(E) so many changes at once as they confronted in - Unidiomatic

If I have to play safe, I will go with D. But, guys, isn't D's they did ambiguous. Is they did (confront) in correct?

C is clean.

Thanks for every idea :-) Anyway, I will not show the answer but I wanna raise some moot points to discuss further.


Why some of us disagree with E? Cannot we use " so....as" when the sentence has negative tone, NEVER BEFORE ?

For anyone who select D? What does "did" refer to? Can it refer to "confronted" ? Maybe, not! " Had confronted" not just "Confronted".

For not using "so....as" read a post by Vithal above.

As for "did" it refers to "confronted"

The place was in a mess and my mom asked , "who did this ?"

"who did this" = "who created the mess"

IMO repeating "confronted" would be redundancy
I hope I make some sense :)
