Man it sounds like your sis has the worst experence in/around AA :)

Anyways.. I have never used Amtrak but I really like travelling by train... but I guess trains are not an American "thing" :)

Irishfan wrote:
Fair warning, the Amtrak is REALLY unreliable, and a bit expensive, considering what you get. I mentioned before, my sister in law visits us from AA using Amtrak sometimes, and it's always at least an hour late...if not more. Renting a car (split among 3-4 people) would probably be the same price, maybe cheaper with weekend rates.

Ha, yeah. I personally have not had the best luck in the area, either. That doesn't even include the ND vs. Michigan games I've attended. However, driving between AA and Chicago is a breeze. Another place to check out in between (in the Summer, preferably on a weekday to avoid the crowds) is the Warren Dunes, on the coast of Lake Michigan. Great beaches, and a mud pit!

And, since nobody asked, here's a quick list of AA pros/cons:

Pros -

Home to the best sandwich shop I've ever eaten at: it's called DiBella's, in south AA. Thank me later.

Friendly people (when you're not wearing opposing college-branded merchandise)

Great bars

Cons -

"Hail to the Victors"

The Michigan Left

It's near Detroit (aka the Newark of the Midwest)

Come to think of it, being an admitted student to GSB, I suppose you are duty-bound to diss our wonderful song. Hail michigan!

Nah - it's strictly a function of going to school in South Bend for four years...and nothing against the school, everything against the football team! :D

Also,

There is nothing bad about being near Detriot. I know the Detroit city by itself has been doing really bad lately but there is many suburbs that are a great place to live. For example Troy is gorgeus:) with one of the biggest shopping malls in the nation and is located in like the third richest county in the country. So... being close to Detroit has nothing to do with the niceness of the area around Detroit.
The fact that Detroit has a bad reputation has nothing to do with the quality of life in the towns on the outskirts of Detroit. Also BCG's Detroit office is located in Troy

I'm speaking from personal experience, here. It sucks to go to say, a Tigers game or a concert at CoBo and have to immediately hightail it out of the city.

Also, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highest-in ... ted_States

But, in case it's not obvious, I'm speaking very tongue-in-cheek, here. IMHO, AA is no better or worse of a place to live than 90% of the country, it just happens to be the home of one of my athletic-fanboy arch-nemeses. That's why all the "disses!" :-D

In my opinion, Amtrak is great in the NE quarter (DC to Boston). Anywhere else there are much better ways to travel than by train.

And somewhere near Troy is located the closest to AA Benetton store :)
And, certainly, there is a big difference of living in Detroit city and in AA, the latter one is like a good, calm, college-style neighborhood and you think about its vicinity to Detroit really seldom.

Ok, what I mean is that

Troy, Michigan — located in Oakland County, the third wealthiest county in the nation with a population exceeding one million residents.

and here is my source
https://www.thesomersetcollection.com/se ... tegoryID=1

soo ... as I was saying, it is not like the surrounding of AA is a bad place to be

Oh, I get it. Kinda like when they say the peak of Mount Everest is the first wealthiest region with an elevation exceeding 29,000 feet.

Nowhere in my last post did I disagree with this statement.

Anyone else see the irony in the future GSB student saying something about Ross not being in the best area.
