Re: 8/20 to 9/20...700 Goal. [#permalink]
Ok, this might be posted somewhere but I didn't see it.

Are these challenges / gmat club tests what you will find if you are scoring well on the real gmat, or are they harder? Do you need to be scoring ~30/37 on these challenges if you want a Q51?

On my 3 math tests with gmatprep & princeton i've scored Q48/46/48. On the 3 challenges I've scored around 15/37 to 20/37 each time.

My understanding of the Challenges is that they are harder than anything you will see on the GMAT....by design.

Will take a verbal challenge tonight and report results later. Spent Monday/Tuesday night reviewing SC and going over math errors. Ran 5 miles yesterday. Checked up on some deadlines.

I have a major presentation to a CEO/CFO for 2 year's worth of billable work tomorrow morning. The good news when there is high turnover is that younger people like myself (24) will get A LOT more responsibility (too much?)

Question 1 Correct 1m 40s
Question 2 Correct 2m 42s
Question 3 Incorrect 1m 41s -CR- logical structure. tough choice between 2.

Question 5 Correct 0m 32s
Question 6 Correct 1m 04s
Question 7 Correct 1m 36s
Question 8 Correct 1m 46s
Question 9 Incorrect 1m 33s -SC- DO NOT change the meaning of a sentence even if sounds better
Question 10 Incorrect 1m 39s -SC- This process resulted in a total of 15 new townships: of which, to date, 7 are still in existence.
should be: This process resulted in a total of 15 new townships: to date, 7 of the 15 are still in existence.
Question 11 Correct 2m 51s
Question 12 Correct 1m 57s
Question 13 Incorrect 3m 30s -RC- Two paragraphs, 1 on a person's background, the other on why his background is actually in a different field. I chose passage structure as "two opposing perspectives presented"; correct is "a misconception introduced, then refuted". Kinda tricky...
Question 14 Correct 1m 22s
Question 15 Correct 0m 56s
Question 16 Correct 1m 06s
Question 17 Correct 1m 51s
Question 18 Correct 0m 53s
Question 19 Correct 3m 12s
Question 20 Correct 2m 04s
Question 21 Incorrect 1m 32s -RC- had right answer but it used some language nowhere in passage that made me scared
Question 22 Incorrect 1m 15s -RC- went after wrong concept, should have read question better
Question 23 Incorrect 3m 56s -CR- could not choose among several choices, had to guess & move on
Question 24 Correct 1m 13s
Question 25 Correct 1m 35s
Question 26 Correct 1m 04s
Question 27 Correct 1m 40s
Question 28 Correct 1m 26s
Question 29 Correct 0m 57s
Question 30 Correct 1m 48s
Question 31 Incorrect 2m 56s -CR- f'ing logical structure again. Narrowed down to 2, both of which were wrong. obvious when looking at answer though.
Question 32 Correct 3m 52s
Question 33 Correct 2m 00s
Question 34 Correct 0m 45s
Question 35 Correct 1m 23s
Question 36 Incorrect 2m 23s -CR- careless mistake
Question 37 Incorrect 1m 23s -SC- this is a very hard one (i think)...should come back to it. the word "which" is my nemesis.
Question 38 Correct 4m 06s
Question 39 Correct 0m 44s
Question 40 Correct 0m 38s
Question 41 Correct 1m 02s
Total 31 1h 12m 11s

4 CR's wrong which is disappointing. Much improved SC. RC as expected. Overall this V02 challenge was a lot easier than expected, I finished early (a first), and scored well! I don't think these are 700 level problems - but if they, that's awesome!

Up at 4am for this early morning presentation.

Hey Michael,

Just saw your post. Good luck on your goal. Totally do-able! I went from a 640 to a 710 in a little over a month, with very inconsistent studying (I'm concurrently studying for the LSAT). SC was a particularly difficult part for me as well. It sounds like you are travelling a bit...I recommend buying the official guides (the Official GMAT guide and the Verbal supplement) and just knocking out 10 sentence corrections on the plane, train, subway, whenever you have a free couple of minutes. They go down easily. :) Keep on doing the same ones over and over again. I would avoid anything from Kaplan, Princeton Review, etc. Those inauthentic questions just don't feel right (maybe someone else can explain why). If you have a strong command of English, SC is totally learnable in a short amount of time since there are only a couple of grammatical concepts that they are really testing you on.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks Leverandon. I do have the Official Guides and plan to use them extensively this weekend.

My last weekend plan before the test. I will report back sunday night with stats.

Fri 9/12
Sentence Correction - do as many practice problems with explanations as possible tonight.

Sat 9/13
Long run early. Verbal day. Complete RC questions in Manhattan. Complete CR questions in Manhattan. Review Manhattan SC (again!).
Complete as many practice questions in OG as possible.
Take v03 around 6pm. I challenge others to do this and post results
USC-Ohio State at night. Go USC.

Sun 9/14
This is math day. I have taken 3 math cats and scored 48,46,48. 50 would be nice and doable if I can improve DS problems. I will briefly review math notes and spend the majority of the day doing OG math problems which I have yet to touch.
Take m09 at night & review it. I challenge others to do this and post results

Monday 9/15 v04 in the a.m. review at night
Tuesday 9/16 m10 in the a.m. review at night
Wednesday 9/17 - UofC class 6-9; go to bed early
Thursday 9/18 - Tutoring 6-8:30; go to bed early
Friday 9/19 - v05 in the a.m. review at night. relax, review all notes and get mentally organized; go to bed early

Sat 9/13
Long run early. Verbal day. Complete RC questions in Manhattan. Complete CR questions in Manhattan. Review Manhattan SC (again!).crazy rains prevented any run, but did a lot of CRs, not 100% complete though. Reviewed SC (again!)
Complete as many practice questions in OG as possible. yep, did a bunch
Take v03 around 6pm. 34/41 on v03 with 8 minutes to spare, best score yet. Of the 7 I missed they were all narrowed down to 2 choices. Which might mean I had 14 that narrowed down to 2...
USC-Ohio State at night. Go USC. hahahaha :)

27/30 CR, ~2 mins/Q
26/30 SC, 1.1min/Q
20/28 RC in 45 mins (the last 4 difficult passages in Verbal OG). Got 5/7 on each passage.

Sun 9/14
This is math day. I have taken 3 math cats and scored 48,46,48. 50 would be nice and doable if I can improve DS problems. I will briefly review math notes and spend the majority of the day doing OG math problems which I have yet to touch.
Take m09 at night & review it. Did not do this, but did timed OG tests instead.
20/24 PS ~52 mins (slow..)
20/24 DS ~45 mins (3 of the 4 mistakes were choosing E instead of C...need to remember to check both)

Nice 9 mile run when the rain finally stopped...

Monday 9/15 OG in the a.m. review at night
Tuesday 9/16 OG in the a.m. review at night
Wednesday 9/17 - UofC class 6-9; go to bed early
Thursday 9/18 - Tutoring 6-8:30; go to bed early
Friday 9/19 - v05 in the a.m. review at night. relax, review all notes and get mentally organized; go to bed early

Misc Notes:
"what casts the most doubt on except" = "what supports"
less is used for non-countable items, fewer is used for countable
Idioms:
compare to (similar items)
compare with (different items)
don't say whether or not
forbid to
with the aim of (not with the aim to)

Math,OG,PS problems last night. Focus on speed because I was running out of time on math challenges.

40 mins. 33/35
#1 - 35.

40 mins. 42/46
#36 - 81.

Mistakes were typically careless. I realize these are easier problems as they are at the beginning of the OG.

How about this?
n/9 = .nnnnn (4/9 = .4444)
nm/99 = .nmnm (62/99 = .6262)

13/15 CR
32 Minutes. 2:08/Q

19/25 SC
35 Minutes. 1:24/Q

SC is the weakest link out of all 5 sections. Going to work exclusively on that more tonight after class. The explanations in the OG are great. (But they also contain tons of errors, anyone else notice that?)

The previous post should have been 20/25 SC [easy]

Yesterday:
21/25 SC, 37 minutes ~1:30/Q [easy]
11/15 SC, 26 minutes ~1:44/Q [medium]
idioms are everywhere. wow!

Tonight:
Complete 50 medium SC's tonight, in 2 sets of 25, timed.
Also, read a few medium RC passages.

as fas as I know, "compare with" is used for similar items, whereas "comare to" is used for different items.

I am not working today. Going to relax, run, read, and so some OG problems.

Also, it occurred to me that there is the AWA part. I read that chineseburned has a great guide put together but I couldn't find it immediately so if anyone has a link, that would be awesome.

Most of the problems I'm going to do are going to be HARD ones, the last ones in the OG.
