you'll want a long dress coat. Nice hat, scarf, and gloves, all matching.

Layering is good since it's freezing outside, but often over-heated inside.

two suits should be fine. Get something conservative and practical.

And at least 3 or 4 biz casual outfits -- mix and match is better. Tailored skirts, slacks, blouses, nice knit pieces.

It will depend a bit on what you're doing: finance, consulting and brand mgmt tracks are more intense (so require more clothes). Finance and consulting tend to be more into suits (especially finance), while other tracks are down with biz cazh.

Lots of Duke students keep a suit in their lockers and just change right before and after company events.

As far as suits are concerned, what kind of material is advisable?

Ok, so I am a guy, but...
go to bluenile dot com. They have pearl jewelry at pretty much any pricepoint, free shipping, no tax outside of WA and they (literally) always have 10% sales. Trust me - i work there - just google coupon and bluenile.

Not exactly a dream to work at, but generally a good deal for customers. maybe not the absolute cheapest online (a couple percent more than some scarier places), but easily cheaper than brick and mortars for same quality.Also they have actually, objectively (not just comparatively) GREAT customer service.

If you are looking for diamonds - they are even a better deal than they are for pearls. Feel free to PM me with any diamond related questions.. I actually have learned quite a bit about quality/etc.

so random question: is it considered informal to wear flats with a suit or skirt/jacket combo? I realize that heels look better but I sprained my ankle a few weeks back and heels are still tricky. I can wear them but not as gracefully as usual. :( And unfortunately, all I have are 3" heels or flats...nothing in btwn. I have the Duke interview in 1 week...do you think the flats will be okay? Should I find some 1" heels?

I would get maybe 1 inch heels or so...thicker heel is fine. Straight flats might make you stand out a bit among people who are wearing heels, and you don't want to be worrying about not looking appropriate right before an interview. Can you do 1 inch or lower and still have your foot feel all right?

good point - the worrry factor. I can do 1" heels and it's fine; maybe even 2 with a thick heel...I think the problem also is that none of my shoes really have thicker heels; they're all the thin pointy variety! I'll take a trip to the shoe stores after work and see what I can find :) The other part that's annoying - all my pants are meant to be worn with 2.5 or higher heels. So a skirt it is!

duke applicants often wear business casual, so don't worry about not having heels, as long as the length of your pants/skirt is ok with the flats.

What is your budget? I have some of my favorites in various categories, I don't go more expensive than the contemporary sort typically and they are younger styling than Armani/Loro Piana etc.

Middle/Less Expensive (on sale):
Banana Republic
J. Crew
Gap (for shirts! I buy them on sale and use the savings to get them tailored)
Aritzia (for tops)

ooh good suggestions thank you! I have plenty of shirts/sweaters/etc to wear under suits but need a better suit. I'm going to explore a bit and see what I like...thanks :)
