Hey guys, do you do this? Spoke to a friend last night and he doesn't do it - and now I feel like an ass because I've been putting the word counts on all my essays (standard practice in Australia)! I was about 5% over the word limit in some cases too ...

I didn't on my essays. What if by writing the word count you went over the word limit?!

I didn't do it, but don't worry about it. Considering the various customs around the world, I'm sure the adcoms see all sorts of stuff like that.

They might even be impressed that you were so honest!

Thanks a lot guys ... I feel like a real jackass actually. It's funny, where I went to university, it is goes without saying that if you are set a word limit you should include your word count - for some reason I thought it applied here as well.

Anyway, you've all made me feel better about it, but I still feel like a dumbass!

This is absolutely inconsequential. Don't worry about it. So long as you are within 3-5% I highly doubt anyone will care or notice.

Put yourself in Adcom's seat - you have a great applicant who used 20 extra words. Would you send him away?
