I was rather disheartened by my 580 as I was hoping for a score of ~620. I obviously need work in both quant and verbal.

I fully plan on taking the GMAT again to prove to myself I can do it and to increase my B-school profile.

Any advice on the steps I should take in my preparation for round 2? Besides taking a couple weeks off

Bummer - sorry to hear about not reaching the target score.

Take a look at this post: gmat-study-plan-go-from-650-to-80235.html

If you need to go up to 620+, it may make sense to reschedule for next month and really dive into it for a month - pick an area easiest to improve and get some specialized math books or verbal books. 40 points is definitely doable in a month.

Also, take full length tests - that's important.

I think the crucial mistake I made was not taking full length CATs including the AWA. When I got to verbal my brain was cooked. Definitely need to work on stamina.

It is one of those painful things that no one wants to waste their Saturday on, but everyone knows they have to do it....
