Could a GMAT score too high actually hurt the applicant? Given the number of dings for 770+ scorers, one might think that the applicant was too bookish or something. Oh well... catch 69/catch 22

IMO these people should be put behind bars for killing the test so so so mercilessly :-D

I don't think any school penalizes an applicant for a high GMAT score. I know few GMATClub members with 770+ GMAT scores who got WL'ed or dinged from schools. They were dinged for various reasons other than GMAT score, such as age, fit, goals, UG GPA, etc.

The highest score I have seen on these forums was a 790. I think that person takes the test every year. On another website, Beat The GMAT, someone scored an 800.

Wow, that's an insane score. But then again, if you want to start a GMAT prep company, then an 800 score might be a good idea (for credibility).

it was already alluded to on this post, but a lot of high scoring people have gotten rejected from top schools. the most egregious example is stanford, who i believe rejected all applicants with an 800 last year or the year before (i forget which)

If you guys browse last year's admit/ding profiles, there is a username (I think LUGO?) who got an 800, applied only to the Wharton JD/MBA program, and was dinged, I think. (Details are fuzzy). Without knowing much about his story (except that he was already incredibly well-educated and accomplished in the City of London), it sounds like he might've been a bit too old, or that the MBA probably wasn't going to add much to a guy who had gotten this year without needing it.

So is the GMAT score something of a filter rather then something that gives you extra points if you score high?

At the top 10-15, yes; the conventional is "a low score can keep you out, a high score won't get you in". It is arguably a necessary condition; certainly not a sufficient condition.

I've still never been able to find evidence of that. I think it's an interweb [strike]myth[/strike] parable.

That's reassuring, I guess even a perfect score isn't always sufficient to get into a top 10.

Haha, I posted in that thread bb. I still haven't seen any source for the information and believe more in the moral and message than the story itself. But your second link was very interesting, thanks!

It's a myth only if people are saying that Stanford disfavors candidates with high scores.

The people who are spreading the myth that Stanford rejects applicants with perfect 800 GMAT scores are exactly those with problems with Critical Reasoning skills.

Stanford happens to have rejected many candidates with an 800, but that's just statistics combined with their policy of not making the GMAT an overriding factor in acceptance. It doesn't mean that they don't like candidates with an 800. Even my brother who's at Stanford right now made that same logical mistake (but that's why he got a 750 and I got a 780 ).

Here's the quote from a speech welcoming the MBA class of 2005:
Quote:
"With 14 applicants for every space in the class, we had to make some difficult decisions," said Bolton. He continued, "we turned down every applicant with an 800 GMAT score this year. We also turned down Olympic medalists, entrepreneurs, managers of thriving businesses, Rhodes Scholars — incredible people who, like you, have achieved amazing success in life and who have compelling prospects for the future.

Source: https://www.urch.com/forums/mba-admissio ... epted.html

Surely, you don't think Stanford rejects entrepreneurs because they are entrepreneurs.
