Hi guys,
I really need urgent advice!!
I have an admit from SDA Bocconi with almost full tuition waiver for the MBA program. My question is this: I want to go into PE/core Investment Banking in US post MBA. I have 5 years of trading-algorithms development and building trading systems for forcasting and trading in global financial markets, and I am with one of the world's largest hedge-fund. I have great acads (Comp Sc. Engineer topper) and 710 gmat.
Now, I know SDA Bocconi is mostly about Consulting post-MBA, so I don't mind working in a good consulting firm for a couple of years and then transition to PE but PE/IB is the field I want to be in ASAP and in US. The reason as to why I am particular about relocating to US post-MBA is that I am getting married in a month and my husband is a Research Scientist in US. (So, visa and relocation is not an issue post-MBA, the only question is that how do US IBs vies SDA Bocconi MBA?) So, is SDA the right choice now for me, given that I am getting an almost full tution waiver?
My choices :
1. Not join SDA and apply next year (2011) in top 10 US schools and join in 2012. (This year if I apply I may not get top 10 schools in US coz of lack of international exposure and lack of great extra-curricular activities)
2. Join SDA this year with full tuition waiver. (This solves my above 2 weaknesses as I will try to make my Resume stronger while at SDA) And do a second MBA from US top 5 schools after a couple of years (2013).
3. OR Join SDA this year with full tuition waiver and transition to US IBs (How? Is the b-school recognised in US?) and no need of second MBA.
Please help!!
Thanks a ton in advance!!
Hi nns,
As a general rule of thumb, it's easier to find employment in the area that your school is in - the school is better known in that area, the school has a strong relationship with local companies and recruiters, etc. However, it is not always possible. Even at My
MBA Admit, we have consultants from top programs around the world who have relocated to New York.
However, if you are going to relocate, it makes sense to have the strongest brand name possible on your resume. Although SDA Bocconi is a good school, it hasn't yet attained the same brand name recognition as a LBS from UK, for example.
In your case, you mentioned consulting as a career option immediately after MBA, with an eventual move to IB (if you don't get in the field immediately). If this is the case, another course of action to pursue could be entering Bocconi right now, and focusing on recruiting for consulting positions throughout your program. I have had classmates at University of Chicago Booth who recruited for consulting positions at top companies like McKinsey, Bain, BCG, etc. at locations outside the United States. You could follow the same route by recruiting for consulting positions from Bocconi for locations within the United States. Since visa/residency status is not a problem due to your marriage to a US Citizen, this could be a viable option that would allow you to take advantage of the full tuition waiver and still start your MBA this year.
However, if you are absolutely keen on going into IB immediately after MBA, being from an university such as Bocconi that doesn't have the same strong relationships as say, a Wharton, Columbia or Chicago, could make the process slightly harder for you. Being in Italy while the jobs are in New York or the West Coast, could make it still harder. In that case, it may make sense to spend a year strengthening your resume, and applying to US b-schools next year. This would give the US job market, especially for I-banking, an extra year to recover as well.
In summary, your choice depends on your post-MBA career goals. I don't think it makes sense to do multiple MBAs as much as it does to choose a single program that best meets your requirements.
