Its from Kaplan Free Exam. There is no explanation.
I agree searching and to find are redundant, but thats was the official answer when I wrote the exam.

B. for a method for motivating her failing students, the teacher attempted to implement a different teaching method every four weeks but had always obtained the same student performance
C. to find a method to motivate her failing students, the teacher attempted to implement a different teaching method every four weeks, but had always obtained the same student performance
D. to find a method to motivate her failing students, the teacher attempted to implement a different teaching method every four weeks but always obtained the same student performance
E. for a method to motivate her failings students, the teacher had attempted to implement a different teaching method every four weeks but was always obtaining the same student performance

'Searchingto find' is clearly redundant . I will go with A. Can any expert please help?

One doubt with option A... shouldn't it be the teacher had attempted... because it had happened in the previous year and after she attempted new methods, she obtained the same student performance..

Here obtained follows the teacher's attempt in time.. and both are in past tense.. teacher's attempts being the first action in the past and obtained is the result of that action... so should not past perfect be used for teacher's attempts???

+1 for A,

when you are searching, you are trying to find something, so isn't "to find" in D redundant?

When you say "Kaplan Free Exam," you mean the free sample tests that we've been putting up on a regular basis for the past few weeks, correct?

Because if so, then I suspect you're right. Just like the GMAT test-makers, Kaplan needs to test our problems to catch errors and test the difficulty of new material. The free practice sets were offered to students to help them practice, since test-like problems under timed condition are key to improving your score, but the students who took these test-exams in turn are helping Kaplan produce the best material possible by catching errors like these. Thanks to you, we almost certainly have caught this error already by the statistical variance in the data, but I'll make sure the academics team is aware that there seems to be a problem; we'll make sure it's fixed before it shows up in any fully scored and graded activities.

Thanks again for your feedback!

Why not E?

Since "had attempted" shows that she attempted something and failed.

I go with "D", Starts with "to find" rather than "for a method" and uses the simple past tense.

Immagic:

In the logical scheme of things - Obtaining the same student performance should occur after the teachers attempts to implement a method. Hence wrf to B - Had always obtained is incorrect.

It should be Had attempted --- > always obtained.

-Ravi

A. for a method to motivate her failing students, the teacher attempted to implement a different teaching method every four weeks but always obtained the same student performance

B. for a method for motivating her failing students, the teacher attempted to implement a different teaching method every four weeks but had always obtained the same student performance

15 sec for A. C, D, and E is redundant, searching to find. Method for motivating students change the meaning (choice B). So, A is correct.

+1 A to; no need for had attempted as we dont need to show sequencing in this sentence.

Re: Last year, searching for a method to motivate her failing students, th [#permalink]
Why is E not an correct option here?
I was confused between A and E, but then discarded E because :

e) for a method to motivate her failings students, the teacher had attempted to implement a different teaching method every four weeks but was always obtaining the same student performance

I was not convinced that this is correct usage because there is no reason to show this time sequence, since it is an obv sequence, and usage of progressive tense is not proper.

sayantanc2k please help

thanks in advance
