Re: [IR] The table summarizes information in serveral categories [#permalink]
Could someone please explain how to decide on True/False for the third statement of the question?

Thanks.

As for the third statement, sort the table by Self-check express lanes. Look above the average and below the average. There are three stores (I, H, C) below the average. All of them do have restaurants. On the other hand, there are six stores (A, B, D, F, G, E) above the average. Most of them do not have restaurants. It is stated that stores with fewer lanes are less likely to have restaurants than stores with more lanes. But it's quite on the contrary. So, the statement is false.

hi there, first sort the average customer age field. You will notice the trend that as age increases, the number of self check unlimited lanes decreases. Like any set of real world data, don't expect it to be perfect. One or two outlier points can be expected. However, do look at the overall/big picture. For the most part, the number of self check unlimited lanes decreases with increasing age. Also the difference in age from 28.4 to 29.4 is small so the two dots on a scatter plot would be relatively close together without skewing the overall trend.

So because it's a "negative correlation" we can make the assumption that is an "overall negative correlation?" Is correlation the key here in making assumptions like this on IR?

Thanks!

i am also confused that why answer to statement 2 is marked "true". because there is not uniform negative correlation. there are some exceptions also.

experts please explain it thoroughly.

thanks

Hi guys,

I don't understand the reasoning by the answer to question 2 is true.

Especially while the age goes from 29,9 to 28.4 even though the number of lanes is smaller.

Isn't this ONE case a positive correlation?

Can somebody please help.

BTW: Source is GMATPrev Software v2.1

Hi, could I please request if someone could guide me on Q2. It asks for a negative co-relation - which is absent in the data.

Then why is the answer true, thanks. Attaching a snapshot for ease.

If you put all these points on graph, except for one value, all other values will look in getting reduced as you progress. So overall (collectively) it shows negative trend, if you put a trend line it will have a negative slope .... so the answer is true. Go by collective pattern

There are three outliers though: store I, store E and store F, that's 1/3 as an outlier; what is the cutoff point?
