I hear round 1 is best.. but is round 2 bad?

R1 and R2 are about the same at most schools, so you are better off waiting until R2 if your application needs more work than rushing it out. Beyond R2 at most school things become very difficult.

At a few schools R1 is better than R2 (Columbia ED, Stanford and MIT come to mind). At the rest, both are roughly equivalent.

good to know. even though ALL schools will try to tell you that R1 and R2 are the same, I think R1 is better just in the sense that you'll find out earlier, and the adcom have more leeway of giving you a waitlist if you're borderline, so you get a "second chance" to prove to them that you're worthy in the coming months... Just my 2 cents...
