Short Term Goal

Hi,

I am in a dilemma with regards to my post MBA sort term goal:

1. Initially, I had written the goals statement straight from my heart (as everyone suggests) - I want to be a Management Consultant for a top consulting strategy firm with a focus on Energy sector (I have worked in Energy throughout my career, and want to transition to MC).

2. But then I realized that no that the top firms hire only for generalist roles, and allow their employees to find their niche in due course of time.

3. So I changed it to plain jane Management Consulting. But this doesn't sound too specific. Though there are some transferable skills that I can speak about, but not very relevant to my past experience.

My question is: When the question asks about my short term goal: Can I mention 2 short goals: Either MC with a top firm OR Business Development/ Strategy in Energy industry. This makes my goals look more credible. They are specific goals, yet shows my flexibility.

Your views on this.

Hi there,

Good question, and overall I would say yes, to your final q... you can mention those 2 possible short term goals, ideally both leading to a primary long term goal; they sound reasonable and related to your background. And alternatively I also think it'd be ok to stick with your original statement as it is detailing your personal interest (i.e. even if you weren't HIRED specifically for energy sector consulting, you're explaining here in the app that that is what you are most interested in which is fine). Thank you for the response. But I somewhat disagree with this:

I believe that our goals must be ours, and they must be achievable. If I write something which i really want to do, but the probability of me getting hired into those roles is bleak, that would not be a strong goals statement. Moreover, I also have to write the companies that I would be targeting post MBA. The fact is that very few firms hire for Energy consulting roles post MBA, which again makes my task difficult. Your views on this?

Hi there,

Certainly you should be genuine and as realistic as possible in your goals. And to re-iterate, as I mentioned above I did agree with what you had suggested in your post? If that makes sense? I think that is appropriate, and mentioning 2 options is fine. I just also believe that if you DID want to stick with your orig plan or mentioning MC as the primary or only ST goal, that it is also fine to add mention to the fact that you are most passionate about eventually working within a consulting role in the energy sector if at all possible... you are not applying for the job yet, and the adcomm knows you'll do some exploring... yes they want realistic goals but also to know what you are interested in and how it all flows together... how your past, leads to your MBA, which leads to your ST goals, which leads to your LT goals. I think you are on the right track overall. Hope that helps!
