The argument that the dominant form of family structure today is not the nuclear family, but rather it is a family which is modified and extended, is based on a number of facts: the existence of three-generational families, the amount of vertical and horizontal communication between family subunits, and the extent to which family members offer assistance to one another.

(A) family, but rather it is a family which is modified and extended, is based on a number of facts: the existence of three-generational families
(B) family, but is instead a family that is modified and extended, is based on a number of facts: three-generational families exist
(C) family, which has been modified and extended, is based on a number of facts: the existence of three-generational families
(D) family but a modified extended family is based on a number of facts: the existence of three-generational families
(E) family, but also a modified and extended family, is based on a number of facts: three-generational families exist

Analysis :
(1) comparison is between nuclear family and it is a family -- need Noun to Noun comparison
(2) parallelism is correct : the existence of three-generational families ll the amount of vertical and horizontal communication between family subunits ll the extent to which family members offer assistance to one another
(3) The argument(S) ...... is(V) based on a number of facts agrees S-V pair

(A) family, but rather it is a family which is modified and extended, is based on a number of facts: the existence of three-generational families - wrong as mentioned in analysis (1)
(B) family, but is instead a family that is modified and extended, is based on a number of facts: three-generational families exist - three-generational families exist violets ll str at analysis (2)
(C) family, which has been modified and extended, is based on a number of facts: the existence of three-generational families - intended comparison is not present ( as which is modifying the neuclear family now)
(D) family but a modified extended family is based on a number of facts: the existence of three-generational families - Correct
(E) family, but also a modified and extended family, is based on a number of facts: three-generational families exist - Not , but also --incorrect idiom

Hey,

I rejected A based on the use of 'which'
I do not see a comparison issue here.
Could you please elaborate on your POE for A so I can know if I am wrong in my understanding

Thanks

Elaboration: POE A
Currently the comparison is between nuclear family and it is a family .
nuclear family is a noun & it is a family is a clause.
For a grammatically correct comparison here we need either Noun to Noun or Clause to Clause comparison.

Re: The argument that the dominant form of family structure today is not [#permalink]
how do you guy's attack such splits?
Found the right answer in the end but such splits are a tremendous struggle.

Usually I already check the answers while reading and can eliminate wrong splits fast, but I could not disect those answer choices until I read them.
Do you just read all of them?

Haven't found a POE (beside the pronoun error) at first sight .
