First of all, amazing site. I haven't posted much, but I have been a regular reader over the past few months. By far the most helpful group of people I have found on the web.
I thought my experience/story might help some of you out there, and I am curious to hear your thoughts as well.
This last September I took the GMAT and scored a 720 (46Q, 44V, 6.0 AWA). After scoring 740 and 750 on my previous two GMATPreps - I was satisfied but not elated. Since then the "retake or not?" question has been running through my mind, and I have kept up to date on the latest GMAT/MBA Application news. However, I am a college senior and decided to focus on getting a job and worrying about the GMAT next semester.
A couple weeks ago I was flown out to San Francisco for an interview and stayed with family in Palo Alto. After my interview I stopped by Stanford, toured campus, and spoke with the lady at the front desk of the GSB. Not sure how reliable a source that is, but she seemed to know what she was talking about. Anyway, I asked some typical questions about career choice and whatnot, then told her about my GMAT. More or less word for word:
Me: I took the GMAT in September and scored a 720, and...
(interrupted)
Her: Don't take it again.
Me: Really? (told her the Q/V scores) So you still recommend not retaking it even though I only scored in the 76th percentile in Quant?
Her: Yes. Don't worry about it, instead focus on getting quality work experience and on the other aspects of your application.
I was convinced. What do you think?
