Re: What were the gross revenues from ticket sales for a certain [#permalink]
What were the gross revenues from ticket sales for a certain film during the second week in which it was shown?

(1) Gross revenues during the second week were $1.5 million less than during the first week.
(2) Gross revenues during the third week were $2.0 million less than during the first week.

Sol:
Let the revenue during the 2nd week in which it was shown be X. We need to find X

From St 1 we have the Revenue in the first week was which X+1.5
Not sufficient
From St 2 we have the revenue in 3rd week was 2M US$ less. Not sufficient.
We don't know what was the revenue in first week.

Combining we get that
Revenue in 1st week: x +1.5
Revenue in 2nd week: x
and Revenue in 3rd week: x +1.5- 2-----> x- 0.5

Clearly we cannot get the value of x.

Ans is (E) since both statements mention revenue of first week, which we do not know.

Basically they want to know what x2*y2 = TR2, where all 2's denote "second week", x denotes tickets sold and y denots price per ticket.

1) uses different variables (x1, y1 and TR1), and only gives us a relation between TR1 and TR2.. Clearly insufficient
2) uses different variables (x3, y3 and TR3), and only gives us a relation between TR1 and TR3, clearly insufficient.

1 + 2, we know absolutely nothing about x2 or y2, we're only given some weak relationships among the revenues for three consecutive weeks.

So the answer is E

Gross revenues during the 1st week ---X

statement 1 :Gross revenues during the 2nd week--------X-1.5
statement 1 :Gross revenues during the 3rd week--------X-2
nothing about X

so 1+2 is conclusive

hence E

let r1, r2, r3 be gross rev for 1st, 2nd, 3rd week respectively
ques -- r3?

1) r2=r1-1.5.. not suff
2) r3=r2-2.. not suff

1)+2) not suff as we dont know r1
