Re: Calling all HBS 2011 Applicants!! (Including 2+2) [#permalink]
Quick Math:
- They are planning to interview 800 R1 applicants
- Approx. 9500 total applicants each year
- R2 pool tends to always be bigger than R1, lets say 40%R1 & 60%R2

==> Chances of getting invited to an interview in R1 = 800/(0.4 x 9500) = approx 1 in 5 ?

What do you guys think?

In response to an earlier post..I also got an invite. Without giving too much away, my stats do fit the hypothesis that the school may be interviewing those with high GMAT/brand-name undergrad/brand-name post-grad work first.

When will they send out next wave of HBS invites?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hmmmmm, good question, in years prior invites often pulsed out early in the window on cert days of the week, like Tuesday and Friday, which made speculative sense (I have no idea if this is true), since work on which invites to send out happened over week-end or on Monday, then it takes some admin effort to logistically send out say 100, 80, etc. invites.
As the window got 'older' and invites became more random, you sometimes had small batches, even one-offs. My guess is they will send out another wave next week sometime, then a smaller wave 3-5 days after that, and by Oct 25th, like 90 pct of invites are out. The last 10 pct will dribble out fr. Oct 25th to Nov3 Day of the Dead. Bear in mind that actual interviews start on Nov 1, sooooooo, lots of junketeering adcoms will be pre-positioned in foreign locales doing Xmas shopping etc. and other tasks. That means the full deliberative force of the adcom, ahem, is in place NOW but will soon start to disperse. Hard to read apps when you are checking your mileage points and looking for hotel bargains, etc.

Sandy was just an unbelievable resource for me in my preparation for the interview. In one [interview prep] conversation, Sandy helped me figure out my pitch, told me exactly what mistakes I would be prone to making, and got me very comfortable with the universe of questions that I would be facing. It was terrific preparation for the interview, but the session has changed how I approach interviews in general. Sandy's candid insights about how I come across have helped me develop my sense of self-awareness, and genuinely were a great contributor to being accepted to Harvard Business School.

Sandy, does the timing of the interview have any effect? Some people told me having the interview on the last days will make it more memorable to the adcom? Is there any truth in this, based on your veteran experience?

Hello Sandy,

What are your thoughts, as Aspiria asked earlier, on any correlation between acceptance chances and the timing of the interview? It is true that it very well may be that later interviews, let's say, near the end of November are more memorable to the adcom, but then isn't that the time they are tired with all the interview's they have done, and might be tired and frustrated, and perhaps comparing you to a wide range of people that they have interviewed beforehand, therefore giving a more critical and say, negative, feedback on the evaluation form?

Any input before noon Monday will be extremely appreciated.

Cheers,

Applied r1 but no invite yet. Went to Paris this week to avoid stress of waiting but I'm just annoying my brother (and running up my cellphone bill) by checking my email every ten minutes......

HBS says this on their website regarding deferred admission...

How long can I defer my acceptance?

Candidates should submit applications only for the year they plan to enter the MBA program. Postponements and deferrals are rarely granted and are considered on a case-by-case basis. We may grant deferred admission to a limited number of college seniors who we feel would benefit from and contribute to the MBA Program after some full-time work experience.

But they also say this...
All reapplicants, except those who were previously admitted to the MBA Program Class of 2012, are required to complete the Class of 2013 Application in its entirety....If you were admitted to the class entering in Fall 2010 but were unable to attend, please contact Dana Scalisi (dscalisi@hbs.edu) in MBA Admissions for special reapplication instructions.

Does anyone know what the deal with deferral or special re-application is?

These two texts refer to two different situations.

If you are accepted, you can ask for a deferral.
- If your deferral is accepted, you will join the next class (or even the class after that), no need to worry, no need to submit new materials.
- If your deferral is not accepted but you want to join a year later, you need to re-apply "with special instructions". I am not sure what are these instructions are.

My theory on interview invites...

So my theory on interview invites are that the "rockstar" applicants that have great stats and resumes will get the bulk of the interviews in the first wave (no need to go in depth as much into reading the essays yet). The folks who are not obvious rock stars in their stats/resumes are put off into another pile for deeper essay screening. As the adcom looks through this pile, subsequent waves of invites are sent off (greater reason for an invite is needed in these poor soul's case). Perhaps this is just my brain's way of consoling my lack of an invite.
