-The author talks about carotenoids and their effect on animal species
- The author then talks about two views held about carotenoids
1.
"It may be that males can use scarce carotenoids either for immune defense and detoxification or for attracting females"
From the above, it is evident that they cannot be used simultaneously. Hence option (C ) is the right answer choice.
Map- C –Signals , used by animals
F prefer M with Brighter C
O&O Theory – Against C theory
Conventinal Theory
States C required for detox process, health or attracting
M bad health can use C
M good health can use C for display.
A- No where mentioned in the passage
B – Again we cant comment
C – Hold on
D-It is reverse of what is written in passage.
E- Hold on.
Now E says Indeed they do increase the chance , but in question it says Male uses for detoxification purpose that is he is not a healthy male so Caretonids can be used for 1 purpose at a one time either to attract females or to Improve immune system.
So If male is using it for detox then he cant use it to brigthen coloration.
Hence OA is C
2.
"Studies of several animal species have shown that when choosing mates, females prefer males with brighter carotenoid-based coloration.
Owens and Olson hypothesize that the presence of carotenoids, as signaled by coloration, would be meaningful in the context of mate selection if
carotenoids were either rare or required for health."
Option (E) is a clear word justification of the above excerpt. Hence correct.
3.
According to the "conventional view"…
"The conventional view is that carotenoids are meaningful because they are rare: healthier males can forage for more of the pigments than can their inferior counterparts."
Option (D) is correct.
