The subject here is "empirical analysis" -> singular. Thus the verb has to be "offers". Eliminate A, B and C.

In E, it says "wide variety and types or sizes". Does not make sense at all. We'll go with D as the best option.

You missed just one thing. the pronoun "them" in E is ambiguous.
:-D

You are right. 'them' can refer to either acquisitions or strategies.

But when you approach the problems by parallel reading, on the first error, you eliminate the option and move on. Time saver. :)

Subject - Empirical Analysis = Singular
Verb -offer = Plural
Hence, 'A', 'B', 'C' are wrong

OS = 'because of the wide variety of types and sizes..'
'E' = because of the wide variety and types or sizes..'
'E' - changes the intended list and ,hence, the meaning.
Also, 'them' can refer to 'acquisitions', 'types' or 'sizes'
Therefore E is wrong.

D is the correct answer.

Analysis is singular whereas analyses is plural

A. offer limited insight, largely because of the wide variety of types and sizes of acquisitions and due to the lack of an objective way to classify them by - Emperical analysis will take singular verb - offers; due to is incorrect as it does not makes sense when replaced by caused by ; them/this by itself is not preferred as a pronoun.
B. offer limited insight, largely due to the wide variety of types and sizes of acquisitions and also due to the lack of an objective way to classify these acquisitions by - and also - redundant
