Hi aviroop,
I was in MBA tour hoping to see HKust but they didn't come. However, I got to talk to admission director from University of Hongkong and it was interesting

what do you think about both universities comparing to each other?

thanks,

Any suggestions for the interview. A website? What do they ask? which is the hardest question?

Please do a search on previous year's thread and you will find interview discussions. As for website - I am not sure what you mean other than the hkust mba site.

ANy news to this?
Seems like its a lot quieter than the thread last year!!

Interviews have started taking place. Currently a few local candidates were asked to come to campus for interviews. Concurrently adcom is reviewing applications. Expect invites to keep coming. School closes for holidays on Dec 22nd.

dear aviroop,

i am interested in the full-time hkust MBA program, and i have several questions for you. thanks in advance for your time!

a little bit about my background:
i was born and raised in guangzhou, china, and immigrated to US at age 18. i am currently 30, us citizen. I have leadership experience in a small start-up retail business located in a small town in US. my gmat score is 740(q50/V39/awa5.5), however my GPA is pretty low, 2.92 from a state university, B.S. in Computer science. i am fluent in chinese, both manderin and cantonese, and english.

Questions:
1. does hkust generally interest in applicant like me? diverse culture background, career changer, with experience in small start-up retail, interested general management and leadership development program in hong kong or china, .

2. i checked the employment report, there is a good percentage of student get into General management/ leadership development program. usually what are the companies that offers such programs? mostly in hong kong or china? what kind of pre-mba experience do they usually require?

3. about working visa: most of the students from hkust are international students. for a us citizen, is it difficult to get a working visa in china or hong kong?

that is a lot of questions, lol. thanks again for your time!

ppc23275 - see my answers below to your questions

1. does hkust generally interest in applicant like me? diverse culture background, career changer, with experience in small start-up retail, interested general management and leadership development program in hong kong or china,

Yes - HKUST favours diversity, be it in terms of nationality, geography, ethnicity or work experience. So your profile fits what HKUST is looking for.

2. i checked the employment report, there is a good percentage of student get into General management/ leadership development program. usually what are the companies that offers such programs? mostly in hong kong or china? what kind of pre-mba experience do they usually require?

There is a good mix of local and international companies, some of them include Apple, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Li & Fung, IMS Healthcare, Eli Lilly, DHL (in house consulting), Microsoft. Most companies operating in China look in terms of language skills (fluency in Mandarin). Prior work experience depends more on what the role entails. But usually, prior work experience is not a major issue. Most of the companies are either head quartered in Shanghai, Beiing or Hong Kong, so it depends on which company you apply for.

3. about working visa: most of the students from hkust are international students. for a us citizen, is it difficult to get a working visa in china or hong kong?

Not at all - if you study in a HK institution, you automatically get a 1 year work visa which does not need sponsorship from any company. After 1 year, a company usually sponsors you and the process is efficient and friendly - not a nightmare like H1B. Dont wory about visa issues - its the last thing students think about.

hope this helps..

Interview calls to Indian applicants have been sent out in the past few weeks - some folks from Bangalore received their invites during the holidays.

Hi,

I was just checking some of the old posts for the 2012 and 2011 admissions cycle and came across posts where students already received final offers by mid-Dec and Jan 1st week. Has anyone received final admit/ reject offers for the 2013 admissions cycle yet?

Also does HKUST compare students from R1 with R2 students to give interview invites or is each round treated stand alone and independent. The reason I ask is because I came across old posts where students who applied in R1 be invited for interviews with R2 and R3 candidates.

Please let me know the answers for the above 2 queries.
Thank you very much!

1. Admits have started trickling in - not as many in the same time frame compared to last year but the process has started.
2. R1 and R2 are treated separately and independently. Last year due to timing issues some R1 students were interviewed later in R2 round. Students are not compared across rounds.
