When working on a rate question (one involving distance or work) remember to always jot down the formula - Distance = speed*time. Also make sure to be aware of the units used and the possible need for conversion.

The rate is given in miles/hour, but we are looking for an answer in miles/minute

D=S*T
120 miles = 400 miles/hr * 1 hr/60 min * T
120 miles = 20 miles/3 mins * T
120 miles * 3 mins/20 miles = T
18 minutes = t Answer Choice E

Remember you can save time on this problem by calculating in fewer steps; I described every step to give a comprehensive view to students of all different levels. Remember that you have approximately 2 minutes to solve a GMAT Quantitative Question (you need to answer every question in the section), so whenever you can save time please do :)

400 miles=1 hr or 60 min.
1 mile=6/40 min.
120 miles=6/40*120=18 min.

it takes 15 min to make 100 miles, so we cut-off 4 choices.

How many minutes does it take to travel 120 miles at 400 miles per hour?

(A) 3
(B) 3 1/3
(C) 8 2/3
(D) 12
(E) 18

Time = \frac{Distance}{Speed}

Time = \frac{120}{400} Hours. (Note the units)
For getting answers in minute, multiply it by 60 (1 hour = 60 minute)
= 18 minutes

E is the answer.

Time = distance/rate
Plug-in values to get: Time = (120 miles)/(400 miles per HOUR)
= 120/400 HOURS
= 12/40 HOURS
= 3/10 HOURS
So the travel time = 3/10 of one HOUR
Replace one HOUR with 60 minutes to get: travel time = 3/10 of 60 MINUTES
Simplify: : travel time = 18 MINUTES
