(A) twice as fast as (B) twice as fast as it was in (C) twice what it was in (D) two times faster than that of (E) two times greater than Answer CDifficult to choose between B & C. "rate of increase" and "as fast as" seems to be redundant. Use of "what" is correct.

A IMOJust replace 1970's with "the rate of 1970" and you will get the answer as A. noboru wrote: 404. In the 1980’s the rate of increase of the minority population of the United States was nearly twice as fast as the 1970’s.
(A) twice as fast as - Correct as it is. Twice as fast as 1970's. It means that the rate was twice as fast as the rate of 1970. Clear in meaning. (B) twice as fast as it was in -- As it was in 1970's. It conveys that the rate was twice as it was in the rate of 1970. (C) twice what it was in -- Incorrect. Same reason as of B. (D) two times faster than that of -- Two times is not required because double is less wordy and appropriate to use here. (E) two times greater than -- Same reasoning as of D.

RATE OF INCREASE has to be GRETER/LESSER/TWICE/THRICE... IT CANNOT BE FASTER SIMILARLY..RATE OF ASCENT HAS TO BE FASTER AND CANNOT BE GREATER... SO ONLY C AND E QUALIFY AND SINCE E IS MISSING A PRONOUN PHRASE "THAT OF " C WINS

In the 1980’s the rate of increase of the minority population of the United States was nearly twice as fast as the 1970’s.
(A) twice as fast as (B) twice as fast as it was in (C) twice what it was in (D) two times faster than that of (E) two times greater than
here 1980`s and 1970`s are not possessive form so in should surely come so between B & C
will choose C

Twice/greater/two times..does'nt countable/non countable terms come into picture here??We are talking about "RATE" so should'nt we be using "two times" as apposed to "twice"?? Please explain

(A) twice as fast as (B) twice as fast as it was in (C) twice what it was in (D) two times faster than that of (E) two times greater than A. Rate cannot be fast/faster. B. Rate cannot be fast/faster. C. Rate can be twice or 1/2 or 1/3...................Correct. D. Rate can not be two times fast/faster. E. Rate can not be great/greater. rate of = speed / velocity. It is correct to say : X's rate of travel was faster than that of Y. rate of 4,5,6 can be faster than a rate of 2,3. Atleast that is what I think. Maybe I am being too scientific ,but if rate of means frequency or speed you can compare two rates(faster slower). What are your views on my assertion?

No need to have "fast" when we already have "rate of increase"

gmataspirant2009 wrote: No need to have "fast" when we already have "rate of increase" I agree ,but with rate of increase you can use faster - think of it in terms of velocity or frequency: X's velocity(rate of travel) is faster than that of Y(rate of travel/velocity). The same is true for frequency of occurrence. What are your thoughts?

the rate of increase can not be ‘fast’. It has to be ‘high’. ABD out. The rate can not be greater than the 1970’s(the years). Hence, C wins.

I guess the "rate of increase" shouldn't be fast, clear and consice and you could just use WHAT
