Re: Is x equal to –1? (1) |2x – 2| + |2x + 2| = 4 (2) |3x – 2| + |3x + 2|= [#permalink]
My Solution -

1. |2x-2| + |2x+2|

Four cases: \\ 2x+2 + 2x + 2 \\ -2x+2 +2x+2 \\ 2x-2 + -2x-2 \\ and \\ -2x-2-2x-2 \\

Hence we get x= +-1 from the above. So NSF

2. |3x – 2| + |3x + 2|

Exactly the same method and will give x= +-1

Hence B and C are both INSF.

Answer - E

Additionally in 1 any value between -1 and 1 also satisfies.

Is x equal to –1?

(1) |2x – 2| + |2x + 2| = 4
(2) |3x – 2| + |3x + 2| = 6
Stm 1: X can be 1,-1,0,1/2,-1/2 etc.
Stm 2: X can be 1,-1 etc.

Combined - 1,-1 etc.

Should be E.
rahul16singh28 Combine should be +1 & -1
