i'm from CA too and interviewed on campus. paid something like $500 for a RT ticket from SFO to ITH. got a hotel on hotwire for $65/night (the 3 star one is Holiday Inn and they have a free shuttle that will drive you between airport, hotel, and campus). I was in and out of Ithaca within 24 hours.

if Johnson is high on your list, pay the money and do an on campus interview. although the official party line is all interviews are weighted equally, if you get waitlisted (or worse), you don't want to wonder whether interviewing on campus would have made a difference. when i interviewed on campus, 75% of the other interviewees there had flown in from outside the US. if others can fly in from Shanghai to interview, you can fly from CA.

R3 just got emailed for an interview invitation. w00t. $640 just for the plane ticket out there from Cali ouch! Do you guys usually just fly there, interview, sleep, and then go home?

I also was coming from California. I went and was accepted (R2). I know it is pricey, but with a school like Johnson I think it makes a big difference. But, that being said all interviews are supposed to be weighted equally. So, I think the biggest decision factor is if you want to see the campus and see if it is a place where you could see yourself. I went in on a Saturday for my Monday interview so I wasn't too tired or anything. Also, it gave me a chance to see Ithaca, which was important for me. If you haven't visited, I would recommend going if you can afford it and take the time off.
As for cheaper flights, I paid under $400. I used hipmunk.com to help me find better deals. I love that site! I've found it is so much easier to use than other sites.

If I was from California, I would fly in as well. I did my interview over Skype, but only because I'm in Hawaii and the cheapest ticket I could find was for $1100.

That said, the interviews are weighed equally so even if you cannot interview on-campus, I would suggest mentioning during the interview how much you wanted to visit but couldn't because of xyz. Talk to current students via Connect with Johnson. Showing how much effort you put into connecting with the school is more important and enough to show your interest in attending and to make up for the off-campus interview.

Good luck!

I just want to add to the discussion regarding having your interview on campus. I was based in Oregon when I was invited to interview in R1. I actually just moved there to start a 3-month project for work when I received my invitation. Because of that, I was left with no other option but to do my interview via Skype. In the end, I was still accepted.

Although flying to Ithaca is a big plus, I think having a solid answer for the "why Johnson?" question should more than make up for not doing your interview on campus. Besides, doing the Skype interview is almost like having the interview in person because you still see your interviewer and get to gauge how it is going based on how they react to your answers.

With that said, if you decide to do your interview off campus, i recommend that you do your homework. You have to make sure that you reach out to the ambassadors and learn as much as you can about the program before the interview. I spoke with nine of them, and their feedback was invaluable.

Good luck!

THANKS to everyone that contributed to the discussion. Looks like I'll be coming out March 12th. Johnson is definitely my top choice, so it feels right to go check it out.

Kudos for saving me a grip load of money compared to booking this directly on their website!

I got the call on Monday and received an e-mail yesterday. The decision letter did not mention anything on scholarships. Does that mean they did not offer me any?

Any idea how big is the wait list pool for R1 and R2.
My few observations--- They haven’t made as many offer as they made in R1 ( based on 1st page). Therefore their R1 yield must be high. Also I read interview of Johnson Adcom on Accepted.com where she mentioned high application volume for R1.
In contrast to last year this year they will not give any feedback to wait listers. This I was told by admission person.
If I have to combine all this-- for us chances are slim.

I don't think that the interviews really are weighted equally. I think if you live in CA or Hawaii then they understand that you may not be able to come out. But if you live on the East Coast or close to the school, and if you have the mentality that the school is your first choice, then the school expects you to visit. Meeting someone in person is different than meeting someone on a computer screen. Just my opinion. I got the call for R2 a week ago but still no letter. Anyone else have this happen to them?

Same with me. Application went under review on the 15th, and I still haven't heard anything.

Mine went under review on the 20th. Still waiting to hear back. I understand some people have already interviewed for Rd3. Is it getting late in the game for people without invites yet?
