I couldn't make ends or tails out of this sentence! Is this GMAT quality?

I think GMAT Hacks produces reputable GMAT like questions. I got this question correct and so have 4 in 10 respondents to the question and haven't achieved a high proficiency in SC yet. Just because a question is difficult does not mean the quality is poor. I will post the official explanation and hopefully that will provide some insights into the question for you.

I got it correct based on grammar, but I'll be darned if I can figure out what the sentence is actually trying to state.

Yes that's exactly what I meant. I wasn't able to understand the logic of the sentence. That's why I asked if it's GMAT quality, since the meaning -to me at least- was ambiguous and unclear.

But you are correct, grammatically, some choices could be eliminated

Well I have to agree that the question is not like the Official Gmat questions.Hence, most gmat experts will tell you to practice from official sources only (at least in initial stages of your preparation) gmatprep, OG,verbal review,QP1,etc

(C) adaptations to the heart muscle, relatively slow, easy running does an excellent job of promoting

got OA C : Both of the meaning and grammar is important ,but in the first step consider the meaning and base of meaning look at the grammar then found which one is the possible correct answer.

the desired results.

(A) adapting heart muscles, relatively slow, easy running does an excellent job of promoting

(B) adapting heart muscles to relatively slow, easy running, which excellently promotes

(C) adaptations to the heart muscle, relatively slow, easy running does an excellent job of promoting

(D) adaptations to the heart muscle, running slowly and easily does a relatively excellent job of promoting

(E) heart muscles that adapt to relatively slow, easy running, which do an excellent job of promoting

A, B out = "adapting heart muscles" .. incorrect usage (training should not be compared with heart muscle) . Plus in B, "excellently" is incorrect
C = lets hold (could not find any error initially). (Training || adaptation)
D out = "relatively".. redundant
E out = "heart muscles that adapt"... incorrect usage (training should not be compared with heart muscle).

So left with C

I think this question should read "Many adjustments take place in and around the muscle cells as a result of training, and as for adapting heart muscles, relatively slow, easy running does an excellent job of promoting the desired results" :| Any thoughts from the experts?

It is clearly between C and D. Because we need to use adaptation.D is wrong because it uses relatively excellent job, which is totally wrong.

Changes to the heart muscles are being compared to ‘changes in and …’ This means that C and are the two possible choices, as ‘adaptations to the heart muscle’ is the construction that best fits this form. D is wrong because it moves relatively, so the adverb becomes an adjective describing ‘excellent job’ and changing the meaning of the sentence. So C is the right answer.

A, B and E can be eliminated using comparisons. "Many adjustments" can't be compared to "adapting heart muscles" or "heart muscles that adapt". Between C & D, D is eliminated due to incorrect placement of "relatively".
