Re: The report recommended that the hospital should eliminate [#permalink]
I have a problem in understanding this problem.
How can it be written as
"The report recommended that the hospital eliminate unneeded beds"

"should" is missing in the sentence, and it sounds weird. Are helping verb not written in subjective mood?

The report recommended that the hospital should eliminate unneeded beds, expensive services should be consolidated, and use space in other hospitals.

A) should eliminate unneeded beds, expensive services should be consolidated, and use space in other hospitals.
B) should eliminate unneeded beds, expensive services should be consolidated, and other hospitals' space be used
C) should eliminate unneeded beds, expensive services should be consolidated, and to use space in other other hospitals
D) eliminate unneeded beds, consolidate expensive services, and other hospitals' space used
E) eliminate unneeded beds, consolidate expensive services, and use space in other hospitals

POE:
1.since report recommended so using "should " is redundant.
so Option A,B & C are out.
2.report recommended three things:
eliminate unneeded beds
expensive services
use space in other hospitals
and so these three should be in parallel form
in option D : other hospitals' is not parallel with other two.
hence Option E is the correct Option.

Hi folks,

Can someone please explain, why choice D is incorrect?. Only diff between D and E is 'other hospitals' space used' is in passive voice in D and active voice in E. but active and passive voices can be in parallel! Is the meaning distorted in D?

meaning isn't distorted mate... the structure of the sentences should be made as identical as possible.... this is also called parallelism..... check the first two phrases....eliminate unneeded beds and consolidate expensive services..... In these two isn't the structure verb+adjective+noun? so we should make the third action item in the list to parallel.... If you consider D you are pushing used to the end and avoiding parallelism... So E is preferred.

Hi Ankur,

Thanks for posting your doubt here. :-)

This problem pertains to Parallelism. We must keep all the entities as Grammatically parallel to each other as possible. But this is not happening in Choice D:

D) eliminate unneeded beds, consolidate expensive services, and other hospitals' space used: Here, "eliminate unneeded beds" and "consolidate expensive services" are active voice verbs phrases and hence, are grammatically parallel to each other. The third entity in the list is "other hospitals' space used", which is not parallel to the first two entities in the list. Now, it's not so that the active voices verbs cannot be parallel to passive voice verbs. Refer to OG12#36. The correct answer choice of this question has the verbs in two voices parallel.
However, it is incorrect in this sentence because the third entity can very well be made absolutely grammatically parallel to the other two entities without doing anything to the meaning. Hence, we must keep the third verb also in active voice.

Also, use of just "used" to denote passive voice is incorrect. The correct verb to be used here should be "be used".

Hope this helps. :-)
Wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. :-)
Thanks.

With D, the sentence would be:

The report recommended that the hospital eliminate unneeded beds, consolidate expensive services, and other hospitals' space used.

How would you deconstruct it? Clearly the recommendation was for the hospital to do 3 things; that the hospital:

a. eliminate unneeded beds (The hospital eliminate unneeded beds: Correct)
b. consolidate expensive services (The hospital consolidate expensive services: Correct)
c. other hospitals' space used (The hospital other hospitals' space used: Clearly incorrect)

This is a simple, but powerful deconstruction technique that I learnt from the book I am referring to.

Re: The report recommended that the hospital should eliminate [#permalink]
E because of subjunctive, D is off due to parallelism problem and also most importantly "used" instead of "be used". So verb form itself is wrong, a more serious error than parallellism.

Thank you Shraddha and Ayushman.
Ayushman, your technique is amazing. what book are you referring to?
What i understand from this question, is that, when we make entities parallel, we need to make sure that the focus always remains on the subject of question
eg,
eliminate unneeded beds,
consolidate expensive services,
and other hospitals' space used --> focus shifts from the current hospital to other hospital, which is incorrect.

Hey guys,

One thing I do not catch is the subject. Either "the report" or "the hospital" is singular. right?

I see it this way:

the report recommended that the hospital eliminates, consolidates, and uses....

any site to check subjunctive problems?

thanks
