ps does anyone know when R1 deposit is due? perhaps around end of June/early July?
Exact date appears to be 25th June. Just checked with one of the admits.
The only thing I have been told you can really do to get off the wait-list (other than hope for ppl to drop out, like JZ says) is to notify the adcom if you are now a very different candidate because you've added several things to your profile. E.g. are now now the global lead for xyz in your company? are you now an expat in another country? Have you mastered a fifth language? It has to be something that ratchets us up from a "good enough" to a "much better". In other words, if you were putting off any big moves in your career or life b/c of insead, take them. They might just be the thing that makes the adcom realize you're still going places. And even if you don't make it in, at least you don't feel like you've waited 6 months for insead to tell you that you're rejected.
As for me, I'll probably start making my moves in early July. Sept 3 (R2 final decision) is way too far into the future for me. Moves might include taking on more responsibilities at work and applying to other b-schools, while staying on the insead waitlist. Should I apply again to insead, I want to at least be able to put in my reapplication essay that I have more to bring to the table than when I applied last time.
Great post HankScorpio. I am no expert nor do I have 'waitlist-experience', but honestly, this is the best piece of advice you'll get on any of the MBA forums.
You have been waitlisted, and chances to get accepted given the sheer size of the waitlist (I've seen at least 15 waitlisters around on this and other forums, but no or very little dings ...) are slim. You'll either have to be very lucky that the people with the right profile don't accept INSEAD's offer, or do some really impressive stuff over the next months to improve your application.
That being said, it's not a bad time to get waitlisted - still quite some time to improve your profile and work on your applications for the first round of the fall 2011 intakes of the US schools. Obviously, whatever impressive stuff you pull off will significantly improve your chances at other schools as well. And think about your application - what do you think made you get WLed? Could you have written better essays? No clear career goals? That damn GMAT that was too low after all? Chose the wrong topics for your essays? Crappy interviews? I'm sure most of you know what areas you can improve, without the help of some consultant. If you absolutely must, and although I'm no fan of consultants, there's always the option to have one evaluate your application.
You are all very talented people that can make it into a top b-school. Worst thing you can do, is count on still getting an offer from INSEAD. Move on, apply to other schools, work like crazy at work to get some promotion, improve that GMAT, take up some leadership role, ... if you want to make it into a top b-school, work for it. As HankScorpio said, last thing you want to do, is wait and do nothing for 6 months. Don't make the mistake to count on still getting into INSEAD - As hard as it sounds and as much as I wish you would all make it in, your chances for the jan 2011 intake are pretty small. If you don't make, at least you'll have other options available to you. If it still happens and you get in, amazing - great job. Maybe you'll even chose to pursue another professional option by that time, or pick another school.
All the best to all of you.
