Celiac disease results from an inability of the digestive tract, specifically the small intestine, to absorb gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and certain other grains. The body's immune system attacks the gluten as if the protein were a harmful pathogen, often resulting in serious damage to the intestinal lining. People who suffer from celiac disease must eliminate gluten from their diets. Symptoms of the disease include abdominal cramps, bloating, and anemia.
If the statements above are true, which of the following assertions can be made on the basis of them?
a)Anyone who suffers from celiac disease will experience anemia.
b)Eliminating gluten from one's diet will cure celiac disease.
c)People experiencing abdominal cramps, bloating, and anemia have celiac disease.
d)Gluten is found only in grains.
e)The human body cannot always recognize harmless substances.
any explanation please? why E? i chose B :/
Well, this is a Must be True question. So you Must be able to match the correct answer to all the information as given in the stimuli above (which is all assumed to be true).
What you want to do is eliminate any "Could be true" answers, Exaggerated answers, or "New" information answers.
A) A is exaggerated: It takes the information given about symptoms to the extreme and applies it to all sufferers. So it's untrue.
B) This seems to be true, but is it? Is gluten the ONLY cause for Celiac Disease? Will eliminating it actually "Cure" the disease or just alleviate the symptoms. Is there any other cause of the disease? We can't answer these conclusively so B is wrong.
C) This is a reversal answer. Basically it reverses the symptoms of celiac the other way and is immediately wrong. You could have abdominal cramps, but does that mean you have Celiac disease. Many issues give similar symptoms.
D) Again, we know Gluten is found in grains. But is it found ONLY in grains. We don't know nor are we given this information. Wrong.
E) This is true. We are told that gluten is a harmless protein substance that people with Celiac disease cannot absorb and thus their immune system attacks it. Notice how there are no extremes in this answer. The body cannot always recognize harmless substances. Thus, this is true. Cannot always recognize (true - mostly it's ok: Non-Celiac disease sufferers/ but cannot always: Celiac disease). Harmless substance: Gluten.
So nothing in E violates the statements given in the stimulus. Hence E Must be True.
