231. In a certain class, boys' heights range is 10 inches, and girls' height range is 8 inches. What is heights' range for all of the students?
(1) The shortest boy is 2 inches taller than the tallest girl.
(2) The tallest girl in the class is 72 inches in height.

The range of a set is the difference between the largest and smallest elements of a set.

So, we have:
{tallest boy} - {shortest boy} = 10;
{tallest girl} - {shortest girl} = 8;

(1) The shortest boy is 2 inches taller than the tallest girl --> so we have:

{shortest girl} ----(8)----{tallest girl}-(2)-{shortest boy}-----(10)-----{tallest boy}

So, {the range for all of the students} = {girls' range} + 2 + {boys' range} = 20. Sufficient.

(2) The tallest girl in the class is 72 inches in height. Clearly insufficient.

Answer: A.

this is really a tricky question. I started out getting this into algebra and got stuck. The best manner to solve this is to put your head into the question and knowing difference very well not just knowing that difference means 3 minus 1 equals 2.
what is range for all student?
Answer: this has to be the number of numbers between the smallest numbner and the greatest number.
1) tells us to add to the the two ranges and get the answer
