Rephrasing : Such a thing didn’t happen before and since such thing hasn't happened
( MY FORMULA=> PAST ; PRESENT PERFECT)
D) hasn’t happened either before or
E) hadn’t happened before and hasn’t happene IMO C

"Didn't happen" in the original sentence refers to a time before the event Quote: Princess Diana’s dresses set the standard . Hence it use past perfect tense not simple past. That cuts A, C and D 2. B is wrong because "neither" should be followed by "nor" and not "or" E has the right tense. Also the "hasn't happened" is the right tense (present perfect) for the time period between Quote: Princess Diana’s dresses set the standard and now.

I added these parts in red that I am assuming were left off.
A. The original is awkward. B. The neither is wrong. C. didn't happen is not parallel with the later hasn't happened. D. The hasn't happened either before or since has a tense that does describes the past past but not the recent past.
E. Still awkward. but most correct.
I dislike all these options.

looking at the OA....i think the sentence requires 'and'....i did not catch that earlier.
'or' changes the meaning of the sentence......
so A, B and D are out......
C is weird
and E should be the correct one.
"such thing had not happened before and has not happened since"....the difficult part is to understand that the sentence requires the usage of 'and'.....am I right in my understanding???

'thing refers to princess diana's dresses settng standards. we talking event which never occured in past nor till present. we need past perfect had+past -> before. present perfect has+past->since. 'E' does this. I was confused and about to pick 'D', but either or breaks tense mood. hasn't happened before (wrong) or hasn't happned since (right). I could have fallen in 'B' 's trap if they had written, such a thing had neither happened before or happened since. 'C' is nonsense

It's important to remember that every verb gets its own tense. The word "before" (meaning a before a point in the past) requires the past perfect (past of the past-- had + V3), and the word "since" requires the present perfect (past + present-- have/has+V3). So you need both verbs here, each in its own tense. Thus, the answer is E.

Disagree, We do often use the phrase "that never happened before." Unless there is clear indication that we need to use past perfect, one can not jump to past perfect from present tense. In this sentence, I do not see any indication that we are referring to past tense in the second sentence. I although thought the answer C is awkward, I gave preference to it over answer E. I do not know why OA is E.

Dear mirzohidjon, "We often use..." is not a trust-worthy explanation. There is quite clear indication that the past perfect is needed. "Did not happen" is the past simple, which is the appropriate tense for events that occurred at a specific point in time in the past. The second sentence seems to indicate two periods of time (hence the 'and): 1) the period before Diana set (in the past) the standard, and 2) the period since Diana set the standard.

Is'nt C better than E. I think we should use simple past here ( didn't happen) rather than past perfect ( hadn't happened ). What is the need to use past perfect?

The answer is d because it is present perfect tense it has begin in the past and continuing in the present
