I like your family business roles as you have likely gained quite a bit of leadership experience. Your targeted list of schools is reasonable for your background and you have a good chance of getting in if you can get in a strong set of applications in time.
I have a few questions in order to give you better advice:
1) How big is your family business? # employees / annual revenue (Feel free to send me an email directly if you would rather not post here:
scott@personalmbacoach.com)
2) What do you want to do after business school?
3) What extra-curricular activities have you been doing?
Booth and Darden would be good stretch schools to apply to.
Kenan-Flagler and McCombs are nice schools and you would be competitive.
You could apply to Fisher or Rochester, but you can likely do better in my opinion. One could be a very safe safety if you wanted one.
Please reach out for a more detailed evaluation.
Hi Scott,
Thanks for the quick response and sound advice.
1) Our family business is a medium sized trading company of 20 employees (both firms combined) and a collective turnover of approx USD 800,000 in this financial year.
2) I most certainly don't want to go back to my family business. The reason being, i want to do a job in the USA. (And although, i wont be eager to reveal this to an ad-com, Fabric Export market is going through major recession in last few years and I am looking for a fresh start in the USA)
3) I have been involved in the social work like - (Copying from my resume) -
a) Volunteer at local charitable hospital _____________________- planning and execution of free vaccination, blood donation camps, eye camps, Family Planning operations, Hydrocele and Hernia Surgery Camps
b) Amateur Film making - Collected and digitized ancestral history of over 150 years and compiled it into a documentary film that was aired to an audience of 500 people as an introduction to the book release ceremony
(Not sure if above are just interests or extra - curricular, i still included it)
By good stretch schools you mean, should I or shouldn't I? What about duke? I am really eager to apply at duke.
My biggest problem is having 15 years of education instead of 16. I have no idea whether I can mention my diploma without submitting any marksheet? By the way, the university is ready to write a certificate for me that'd mention that 'I am pursuing a diploma course with them and will graduate in July/Aug 2015' Can you please shed more light on this?
Do you think that the schools I have mentioned are good for Marketing or General MBA.
I would also like to mention that having done BCA i have a decent grasp and a lot of interest in coding and computer implementation of management concepts. Is there an mba specialization that may specialize in my area of interest? I know this is really vague and difficult question to answer
Thanks again for your personal attention to my profile
