bipolarbear, I was right there with you until I broke the sentence down a bit. "Attempting" is not actually a verb here. Just look at what happens if we shorten the sentence: "A historian attempting to predict in the 1870's which nation would take over world leadership from the British". Here, you can see clearly that "attempting to predict" is an adjective of historian. Therefore, we revert back to the "have guessed" options and "A" is the correct choice!
