C.

I don't find anything wrong in B other than "where may be found". Is there anything else wrong with choice B.

C) it is in Chicago that one would find many of the most elegant examples of skyscraper architecture
D) you would in Chicago find many of the most elegant examples of skyscraper architecture
E) of the most elegant examples of skyscraper architecture, many are to be found in Chicago

A .. passive
B .. Chicago is where may be ..does not sound right
D .. way off [you would IN Chicago ...]
E .. passive

C is good.

I could be entirely wrong, but I can't chose c b/c of the word formation "it is Chicago that one". If that were replaced with 'where', I'd go for C. To my ear, it does not sound like an accepted usage of English grammar, but I could be wrong.
Between A and E, I picked A.

OA please?

Just thought of another reason to refute C. 'One' can't be used to refer to any subject other than 'one' itself.
Ex. If a person wants to enter the olympics, one has to pass some truly challenging prequalification rounds. -- Incorrect
Ex2. If one wants to enter the olympics, one has to pass some truly challenging prequalification rounds. -- Correct

what's the official explanation? Upon closer examination, I suppose that the rule about not using 'one' to apply to any antecedent is not relevant here. But is it really idiomatic to be using 'that' in the sentence? The sentence just begs for 'where'.

Iatoshka, I'm sorry. OA is A and OE is:
The first version of this sentence is grammatically correct and more effective than any of the other answer choices, all of which needlessly separate words and phrases that logically belong together.

Not happy with OE too much though. I prefer your explanation of "one"

OA should be A. I came to picking A as well. The use of 'one' in C is not desirable. You need to use 'one' with 'one'. In this sentence, it says some people, not 'one'.

Re: PLEASE ANSWER THE QUESION WITH POE [#permalink]
this is of the form : Although X, Y

Although X (some people ).........., Y ( you )

leading to D

but my humble 2 cents that stems from my 2 miserable attempts and devouring/ exhausting though not internalising of almost all gmat sources : for handholding u can get in touch with any institute/ course but for practise only n only OFFICIAL SOURCES ie OG 12/11/13 , Verbal review 2nd edn, and gmatprep collection ( download ... Its a sticky one under whiplash's name ) ............ Anything other than official source esp fr Verbal is/should be a RED FLAG

The reason I didn't chose D is because the place of ' in Chicago' in sentence.

you would in Chicago find many of the most elegant examples of skyscraper architecture
you would find many of the most elegant examples of skyscraper architecture in Chicago.

Which would you prefer to use ?

Another reason for weakness of C may be "would" that can be used as "if...would" or rephrasing statement with "will". None of these cases is here

Hi jlgdr,
is definitely not a right choice since it uses relative pronoun "that" to indicate a place; "where" would have been a best choice.

Grammatically, both A and C seem to be fine. Ideally, "May" in A should have been "can", and in C, "would" should have been "can".

Hi,

I too feel OA should be C cause the clause "Although some people think of New York as the quintessential high-rise city" has to be either followed by the alternate city which is actually the high-rise city or some reference to the people who disagree with the "some people" in first clause.

Only option C refers to either one of the two correctly...
