powers - plural so A,B and C are out
between D and E I ll go with E
make a group sounds better than make as a group

Second 'that' modifies 'powers of observation' --> need 'make'
E is not concise and lacks clarity.

D is best.

Between D & E, E is definite verbose " make his letters a group which is the rival of" than D. I think D should be correct Ans.

Very close comrade. It's his powers that made his letters as a group (collective) the rival...

I know it's been a while since this thread has been added to, but what is the meaning of this sentence? How do the powers of observation make his letters as a group the rival of the best novels of the time?

"powers" eliminates ABC thus between D&E, E is crude and group is rival of novels , but the fact is letters as a group is the rival thus D

D.

Watch out for "which" on the GMAT. In E, which is wrong, because it should generally follow a comma. Also, "Which" should Only introduce a non-essential idea, and in E it introduces a phrase that is important for the meaning of the sentence.

The subject is " powers of observation", so should be "make"(B) makes his letters as a group one to rival
Same as (A)
(C) makes his letters a group rivaling
Same as (C)
(D) make his letters as a group the rival of
Idiom, make ... as is wrong.
(E) make his letters a group which is the rival of
So I choose (E)

"his letters as a group" is a phrase and it is not related to make idiomatically.

the construction of the sentence is make X the rival of Y
