GMAT weekly questions

For an agricultural experiment, 300 seeds were planted in one plot and 200 were planted in a second plot. If exactly 25 percent of the seeds in the first plot germinated and exactly 35 percent of the seeds in the second plot germinated, what percent of the total number of seeds germinated?

A. 12%
B. 26%
C. 29%
D. 30%
E. 60%

In the first plot 25% of 300 seeds germinated, so 0.25 x 300 = 75 seeds germinated.

In the second plot, 35% of 200 seeds germinated, so 0.35 x 200 = 70 seeds germinated.

Since 75 + 70 = 145 seeds germinated out of a total of 300 + 200 = 500 seeds, the percent of seeds that germinated is (145/500) x 100%, or 29%.

Re: For an agricultural experiment, 300 seeds were planted in one plot and [#permalink]
For first plot germinated seeds = .25 * 300 = 75
For second plot germinated seeds = .35 *200 = 70
Total planted seeds = 500
Total germinated seeds = 145
Percent of the total number of seeds germinated = \(\frac{145}{500}\) * 100 = 29%

D) 30%
E) 60%

Seeds planted in one plot = 300
Seeds germinated in one plot = 25% of 300 = \(\frac{25}{100}\) x 300 = 75

Seeds planted in second plot = 200
Seeds germinated in second plot = 35% of 200 = \(\frac{35}{100}\) x 200 = 70

Total seeds planted = 300 + 200 = 500
Total number of seeds germinated = 75 + 70 = 145

Percent of the total number of seeds germinated = Total seeds germinated / Total seeds planted x 100 = \(\frac{145}{500}\) x 100 = 29%
Answer C...

First plot : 300 seeds
Second Plot : 200 seeds

Seeds germinated in 1st plot = .25*300 = 75
Seeds germinated in 2nd plot = .35 * 200 = 70
Total seeds germinated = 145

Total seeds planted = 500
Percentage of seeds germinated = (145/500)*100 = 29%

We are given that 25% of 300, or 0.25 x 300 = 75, seeds germinated in the first plot. We are also given that 35% of 200, or 0.35 x 200 = 70, seeds germinated in the second plot. Thus, a total of 75 + 70 = 145 seeds germinated, or 145/500 = 29/100 = 29% of the seeds germinated.

OFFICIAL GMAT EXPLANATION

In the first plot 25% of 300 seeds germinated, so 0.25 x 300 = 75 seeds germinated. In the second plot, 35% of 200 seeds germinated, so 0.35 x 200 = 70 seeds germinated. Since 75 + 70 = 145 seeds germinated out of a total of 300 + 200 = 500 seeds, the percent of seeds that germinated is (145/500) x 100%, or 29%. Thus, the best answer is C.

\(\frac{300*25}{100} + \frac{200*35}{100} = 75 + 70 => 145\)

So, percent of the total number of seeds germinated is 145/500*100 => 29% , Answer must be (C)

Answer C

300 * 25/100 = 75
200 * 35/100 = 70

= 70 + 75 / 500 *100 = 145/500 * 100
= 29 %

Total seeds: 300 + 200 = 500

Plot A: Germinated: 25% of 300 = \(\frac{25}{100}\) * 300 = 75

Plot B: Germinated: 35% of 200 = \(\frac{35}{100}\) * 200 = 70

Total germinated: 75 + 70 = 145.

Germination percentage: \(\frac{145}{500}\) * 100 = 29%

Re: For an agricultural experiment, 300 seeds were planted in [#permalink]
We can solve by weighted average:

Answer must be between 25% and 35%, so reject A and D

If weights were equal answer will be middle of 25% and 35% i.e 30%
Now weight of 25% is higher (300>200) so answer will be closer to 25%, reject C

Now btw B & C
300/200 = 3/2 = X/Y
Now distance between 35%-25% = 10%
So X/Y = 6/4 (6 is the distance from 35% and 4 is the distance from 25%)
25%+4% OR 30%-6 = 29%
