Lately I have been browsing the sites of the Top MBA Schools. There seems to be a lot people going after these programs. I have a few questions for everyone.
Some of these schools have around 1000+ students.
The question I would like to pose is it really worth it?
If a person does end up going to these schools will the recieve individual attention from professors?
The one thing I have learned is that attention and working with professors one on one is the most important thing. I learned the most when I sat down with professors and asked questions and recieved one on one feedback.
Are you guaranteed a job when you graduate from one the big schools?
I have heard about all the pay packages and etc and I am not sure how much of it is true. Doesn't a person have to do their own networking in order to secure a job anyway.
Do companies only care about what school you graduate from?
In my opinion a school is a great indicator, but what does prestige mean in this post-2008 economy.
Wouldnt Programs with a 1000+ people have less money to give out then programs with only around 100 people?
Smaller schools even though they are not presitigious have smaller classes and are willing to give larger endowments.
In the end whats the point of going to these larger programs if a person will come out with a similar knowledge if not better because of 1on1 interaction with professors and overall less debt by attending a less known program?
In my opinion if a company only cares about prestige and fails to consider academic achievement or ability why work for such a company anyways?
Please note I am a firm believer in the GMAT I have learned some esstential skills that I feel will use for the rest of life. The Verbal Section has taught me so much I cannot complain.
Please share your opinion?
(The Questions are Bolded)
I really look forward to your replies.
The question I would like to pose is it really worth it? In short, Yes.
If a person does end up going to these schools will the recieve individual attention from professors? Not sure, maybe a current student can answer this better. I don't doubt the level of teaching, though.
Are you guaranteed a job when you graduate from one the big schools?Nothing is ever guaranteed. However, if you look at the placement reports from the top 10 schools...its VERY good. they place 85%+ within 3 months of graduation. While its not 100%, consider these grads are looking for high-paying, high-prestige jobs for the most part..so that is a VERY impressive number. As far as doing your own search, sure your network helps, but pretty much every top 1 -20 school has awesome career services people that want to place you. Literally, it is their job to place you.
Do companies only care about what school you graduate from?To a certain extent. a HBS on the resume looks a lot better than a Thunderbird for example. Look at the difference in companies that recruit at schools. You'll see a lot more bb banks and MBB at the top 10 than the rest of the MBA programs.
Wouldnt Programs with a 1000+ people have less money to give out then programs with only around 100 people?not a lot take in 1k+ classes. however those that do often have GREAT alumni networks and plenty of money to give for need and merit based aid.
Its not the same amount for each program, regardless of if they have 10, 100 or 1000 people.
In the end whats the point of going to these larger programs if a person will come out with a similar knowledge if not better because of 1on1 interaction with professors and overall less debt by attending a less known program? See above responses, but I believe the instruction is better. That and the recruiting easily trumps a less known program, thus jump-starting your career.
