I was getting the figures from my GMAT score report. AT the bottom it had a figure of something like 650,000. I believe that was the figure for the last 3 years, but I can't find the source anymore.

So let me rethink this. I'm going to go with 1%, not 2% - two reasons. First, the numbers are from my score report which, at the time, reflected a 750 as 99%, not 98%. Also, the switch to 98% was very recent, so its unfair to assume that in the last 3 years I should be using 2%. I should be using 1%. So lets do that...

So, if were talking 657,000 and 1% beat that - then 6,570 people over the last 3 years got 750+. Year over year, that means about 2,000 people per year.

i guess simple math will give these numbers.
each year about 2 lakh (200,000) people appear for GMAT.
1% get 750 plus.
so that would be about 2000 every year.

760 = 99%ile nowadays.

How many seats are available for the top15 schools? Yet no school has a gmat average over 720 (roughly speaking, don't kill me on it). Either these 760+ have weak profiles or schools don't put too much weight on gmat. I choose the latter.

There's definitely a selection bias on this forum. The fact that you guys are hanging out talking about this stuff and researching in March (and have already taken your GMATs!) shows that you guys are pretty serious about b-school. I didn't even take the GMAT until late October of last year. So I wouldn't assume that super-high GMATs are going to be the norm for next year, you guys are just ahead of the game!

Of the 2,000 people that we assume get a 750+ each year, I wonder how many are going to apply to H/S/W. A lot of those people are probably people that have a high GMAT but not necessarily a "top 3 caliber" profile so they won't bother applying to all the ultra-elites (I would fall into this category), and then there are some people who take the GMAT for applying to other programs like people seeking Economics or Finance Masters.

I thought about HBS, but considering the time involved for the app, my chances of getting in are slim and none, and if I did get in I'm not sure I would even go, I don't think I will apply. Maybe I will reconsider between now and Round 1.

I actually want to move into M/S consulting (despite what you told us in the consulting thread), so what higher schools would you recommend?

HBS would of course be great, but its a brutal app with low odds.

If you want to do MC, take good look at:

Chicago

Both serious consulting powerhouses. BCG, Bain, McKinsey, BAH, LECG, Accenture, you name it ... they recruit there. In big numbers too.

At Kellogg:

Kellogg wins the MC race but both do very well.

Columbia is like Chicago in that MC is not the most popular choice for students, but their placements are still very high:

McKinsey: 31
Booz Allen: 22
BCG: 10
Bain: 8

Wharton also has great placements for consulting. I believe Mckinsey hires 40-60 there each year.

MC is a very popular field for MBA students, so placements probably closely track traditional reputation measures.

Any ultra elite should work quite well for consulting or any other job of your choice, outside of the ultra hot PE or VC for which no school is enough. Well, that is, except for Chicago, which is obviously a finance only school (that last comment was ajoke aimed at the notorious GSBer in the board)

I'm not so sure about Cornell. I think it's not so consulting friendly? I guess it's your backup. If so, I would look for another backup with better consulting stats.

Man, I think you guys persuaded me to apply to Kellogg.

As for Cornell, it is my back up and I have a good friend who is an alumni so I almost feel obligated to apply. Not sure yet though. I'm kicking around Darden or UNC instead because of MC placements.
