Re: A corporation plans to hire several new administrators and several new [#permalink]
On the Official EA Prep I chose 7 new administrators and 4 new admin assistants and it was marked wrong. Apparently the correct answer for this problem is 4 new admins, and 7 new admin assistants...

Could you please advise for this question? The math doesn't seem to make sense.. None of the answers above seem to be correct and on the official responses, the answers are inconsistent.. states that its both Q1:4 / Q2: 7 AND Q1:5 / Q2: 7.

A corporation plans to hire several new administrators and several new administrative assistants. It has a budget of exactly 100,000,000 yen (¥) per year allocated to spend on salaries for these new hires. The corporation wants to hire enough new administrators and administrative assistants to use all of this budget, and no more, each full year after the hiring. The annual salary will be exactly ¥10,000,000 for each administrator and exactly ¥7,500,000 for each administrative assistant.

Select from each drop-down menu the option that creates the most accurate statement based on the information provided.

Statement: Hiring exactly_____________new administrators and exactly______________new administrative assistants would meet the company's stated goal.

First Blank

A. 2
B. 3
C. 4
D. 5
E. 6
F. 7

Second Blank

A. 2
B. 3
C. 4
D. 5
E. 6
F. 7

Let the number of administrators be a, and that of administrator assistants be b, then we are looking at whether 10,000,000 a and 7,500,000 can be closest to 100,000,000.

\(10000000a+7500000b\leq 100000000\)
Or we can take it as ‘=‘, as complete money has to be spent.
Divide the entire equation by 1000000
\(100a+75b=1000……..4a+3b=40\)

b should be a multiple of 4 as other two terms are multiple of 4.
1) b=4, then 4a+3*4=40 or a=7
2) b=8, then 4a+3*8=40 or a=4
3) b=12, then 4a+3*12=40 or a=1

Only (7,4) is possible from choices, and maybe assistants are required to be more than administrators.
But since only 7,4 is in the choices, our answer is F,C
