Sorry to hear about that experience with the Cornell alum =(
I interviewed off-campus (in Los Angeles) with Adcom. It was a normal experience, no hard questioning, very standard questions in my opinion. So, I think if you go with Alum instead, they tend to be less predictable in terms of what they'll ask. They receive training/questions beforehand, but I think some Alum ignore that and just ask whatever they want. The upside is that those conversations tend to be more interesting, and if you do well, your evaluation will stand out to the admissions committee. So - it's a toss-up. Me, I don't like unpredictability, so I went with the Adcom.
I personally didn't visit the campus, didn't really see a need. Sure, they look favorably upon it, but I don't think someone would have a huge advantage over someone else if they flew into Chapel Hill vs. doing it locally like I did. I really only visited once I got my acceptance and went to Experience Weekend.

Thanks Limegreen. I am yet to schedule my interview it has been about a week since I received the invite. I am still thinking about it. I will decide in a couple of days. I hope I am not too late to schedule an interview.

To add on to my previous post, I got this reply form a current student when asked about what to make out of an interview invite
"As far as interviews, if the admissions committee determines that they are interested in getting to know you better, they will send out an invite for an interview. Everyone who is accepted is interviewed, so it is certainly a good sign they have shown that initial interest!"

I just wanted to correct the stats as I see that I am listed in R3 and my name missing an "L"...i applied for R2 (12/3) not R3, interviewed this week on campus..very casual interview, more conversational, none of the typical questions. Adcom looked at my resume and kind of asked questions related to how I ended up at my undergrad school, why I chose to work at that particular state after graduating, she did ask if I ever had a team member underperforming and if I had any qs related to the fellowships and financial aid, which I thought was weird and wasn't sure what to ask. Overall, very friendly interview, made me feel extremely comfortable.
