Hi,

I am applicant from India; received my interview call a couple of days back for round 3.

I had interviwed for Cornell in round one and was dinged. I did an Alum interview and I think did not have the best interview experience. The alum doubted everything I said and cross questioned. Moreover, he has gone to school after some 9-10 years of work ex and therefore kept insisting that I, with a work of 4 years at matriculation, was too young and did not have enough managerial experience. That fact that he graduated in 2009 and was little unhappy with what he got from the market and had to return to India, made him ask weird questions about what if Cornell did not fulfill my expectations etc.

In all I did not enjoy the interview and was kind of put off by his attitude and was almost certain that I was not getting a call from the school.

I am sure I do not want to repeat such an experience; I would want to speak to someone who is keen on exploring positives as well and engage in a more encouraging discussion. I am open to question but not open to be interrogated.


In the light of my experience, I want to ask you guys out here do you think adcom interviews are more on a positive note.

Please help me with deciding who to interview: the adcom or a local alum once again and if that matters.

Also, is anyone flying to UNC for the interview?

I will appreciate any help on this.

Sorry to hear about that experience with the Cornell alum =(

I interviewed off-campus (in Los Angeles) with Adcom. It was a normal experience, no hard questioning, very standard questions in my opinion. So, I think if you go with Alum instead, they tend to be less predictable in terms of what they'll ask. They receive training/questions beforehand, but I think some Alum ignore that and just ask whatever they want. The upside is that those conversations tend to be more interesting, and if you do well, your evaluation will stand out to the admissions committee. So - it's a toss-up. Me, I don't like unpredictability, so I went with the Adcom.

I personally didn't visit the campus, didn't really see a need. Sure, they look favorably upon it, but I don't think someone would have a huge advantage over someone else if they flew into Chapel Hill vs. doing it locally like I did. I really only visited once I got my acceptance and went to Experience Weekend.

Thanks Limegreen. I am yet to schedule my interview it has been about a week since I received the invite. I am still thinking about it. I will decide in a couple of days. I hope I am not too late to schedule an interview.

Hello All,

I applied for the R3 (01/07) and got an interview invitation on 01/09. I called up the admissions to clarify some doubts and I also asked about who gets the interview invites. They told me that they go through applications which are in progress and filter out high potential candidates and invite them to interview so that the applicants get more time.

In my case the GMAT is only 650 and I have not posted my GPA since I was not awarded in the usual GPA scale. So I guess someone must have manually gone through the applications and then flagged me for interview. I am not sure if this is the case and what to make out of it. But anyways I think it is a good sign.

I am interviewing on campus on 01/28.

To add on to my previous post, I got this reply form a current student when asked about what to make out of an interview invite

"As far as interviews, if the admissions committee determines that they are interested in getting to know you better, they will send out an invite for an interview. Everyone who is accepted is interviewed, so it is certainly a good sign they have shown that initial interest!"

I just wanted to correct the stats as I see that I am listed in R3 and my name missing an "L"...i applied for R2 (12/3) not R3, interviewed this week on campus..very casual interview, more conversational, none of the typical questions. Adcom looked at my resume and kind of asked questions related to how I ended up at my undergrad school, why I chose to work at that particular state after graduating, she did ask if I ever had a team member underperforming and if I had any qs related to the fellowships and financial aid, which I thought was weird and wasn't sure what to ask. Overall, very friendly interview, made me feel extremely comfortable.

Hi,
I had great interviews with the alums at Booth, Cornell, Kenan-Flagler, and several other interviews. Had several dings with/without interviews and several admit offers. Although I was dinged at Booth and Cornell after great interviews, yet, an Alum intervies is great and offers one the best opportunity to relate with the man, his school and his inspirations. IN CASE I DONT TAKE OFFERS THIS YEAR, I will any day prefer an Alum interview over Skype/telephone interviews.

I'm new here. I applied to R2 and got an interview invitation. I am going to interview on campus on 1/18, pretty nervous about it since this will be my first BS school interview. My stats are:

GPA 3.24 (had 3.7 last two years of school)
Background: Structural engineering and project management with 4.5 years of exp
Post MBA goals: Work for a real estate development company
GMAT: 700

For the people who interviewed on campus already, are the questions pretty typical MBA interview questions? Thanks!

I haven't even got an interview invite yet- do they even admit people w/o interviewing? They "kinda" imply that they might get people in without interviewing:
"We aim to interview all candidates admitted into our program."

Yet, here is something else from the FAQ:
"Q: Is an interview required?
A: Interviews are a very important part of the Kenan-Flagler admissions process. For this reason, we will not offer admission to anyone who has not completed an interview. Interviews are by invitation only."

To my knowledge, everyone who was admitted was interviewed. I can't imagine them letting anyone in without interviewing that person .......

I am still waiting to hear from admissions committee. I applied in R2. I am not that optimistic on interview call as the result declaration date is approaching fast.
