You can never be sure! It was probably an inconsistency in my written application, as I got positive feedback from the interview and my recommender (direct supervisor) is very involved with the Columbia GSB. However, they also took 3 other females from my undergrad institution (Top 20 college in the South - not an Ivy) with nearly identical profiles to me during the ED process this year, so they may have been looking for more class diversity?

Sorry to hear about your ding... just wonder how you know they took 3 other females from your undergrad and background.... waitlisted myself and thinking of class diversity myself! hope we get into Booth on 18th at least! cheer!

I think I spoke a bit too soon. Got my ding last night without interview. I must admit, I am a bit surprised. Clearly it was silly/outright stupid of me to perceive CBS as a 'backup' school. Don't know what they are looking for!

Now need to start (and finish!) round 2 apps in a few weeks time. :(

I read an interview with the adcom from HBS who admitted that about 2/3rds of the people who apply are fully qualified in general so its a difficult process to narrow that group down and pick what they think is the right blend of students moving forward. I can't imagine the hair splitting that must take place when reviewing packets at all of these top schools. I am just happy its not my job, but then again most people say that about IT and I love it so to each their own :)
