Re: CMU Tepper MBA Admissions and Related Blogs [#permalink]

Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business has posted the essay questions for the 2016-2017 application, which includes only one required essay.

Tepper offers several options for completing your MBA, from Full-Time MBA to Part-Time On-Campus MBA to Part-Time Online Hybrid MBA. The Tepper community is diverse with various goals, and Tepper is not looking for one particular profile, but rather candidates who are willing to engage with a tight-knit community and are interested in a highly analytical course structure.

Questions about your Tepper MBA application? Contact us to learn more about how Stacy Blackman Consulting can help.

REQUIRED ESSAY
Imagine that you meet up with a member of the admission committee at an airport while on a layover. You have an opportunity to make a memorable impression. Use this essay to introduce yourself. Include any information that you believe is important for the committee member to know about you both professionally and personally. (Maximum 300-350 words, 12-point font, double-spaced)

This is the only required essay for CMU Tepper’s MBA application, and it will be important to explain anything about your personal and professional background that can enhance the data Tepper’s admissions committee has already received from your resume, academic scores and recommendations.

Think about describing the key moments that have been formative in your path thus far, and that are relevant to your pursuit of an MBA now.

As you consider what to describe about your professional background you should focus on accomplishments and filter your experiences with your future goals. For example, if you are seeking an MBA to make a career switch in either function or industry, focus on career stories that show a transferable element to the way you work.

You may want to highlight your analytical skills or how much you enjoy tackling tough issues at work. If you are looking for an MBA to enhance your current career path then you may want to highlight the moments you are most proud of in your career history.

On the personal side, CMU Tepper has a small and close-knit community, and your personality and background will be of interest to the admissions committee. What would your future classmates and professors want to know about you? How might you contribute to Tepper both while in school and after graduation? To add a solid example, think about the formative experiences in your life that might illustrate how you think and behave in a community.

OPTIONAL ESSAY
• Use this essay to convey important information that you may not have been otherwise able to convey. This may include unexplained resume gaps, context for recommender selection, etc.

• If you are a re-applicant, explain how your candidacy has strengthened since your last application.

CMU Tepper’s optional essay provides room to explain any important context to potential issues in your application. As outlined, resume gaps, a recommendation that is from someone other than a current or former supervisor, etc.

Other possible explanations may include academic issues like low grades in quantitative classes or academic probation. A low GMAT score or other profile issue may be worth addressing if applicable.

Re-applicants should always use this space to showcase a strengthened candidacy. If you have improved your profile with a stronger GMAT score or new grades from quantitative classes, that is great information to highlight. If you have increased your responsibilities at work, refined career goals or added new extracurricular activities those are also valid updates to communicate.

CMU Tepper is not asking for you to explain anything you want in this essay, and it will be wisest to stick with the two categories of information specifically outlined. The required essay is open-ended enough to provide the space to offer all other information needed for an admissions decision.

CMU Tepper 2016-17 MBA Essay Tips & Deadlines

You know how you’re always reading that “all MBA programs are different” but after you’ve spent weeks and even months reading all of their websites, they can start to seem like they are pretty much the same? Well, not Carnegie Mellon Tepper. Tepper continues to march to the beat of its own drummer. CMU is committed to the rhythm produced by a combination of analytical skills and leadership education. Unlike many other MBA programs that now allow students to enroll in electives from their first semester on campus, Tepper stands firm in its belief that students are better served by having a common and fixed foundation in the fundamentals for the entire first half of that first year.

Tepper’s class composition is also significantly different from many of its peer programs. Tepper has just 200 students in its class, while Wharton has 860 and HBS has 942. Moreover, while only 25% of Wharton’s class and 38% of HBS’s comprises former STEM undergraduates, a whopping 48% of Tepper students majored in STEM subjects in college. And the flip side of that: while 42% of Wharton’s MBA class and 21% of HBS’s class studied humanities subjects in their undergraduate degrees, only 9% of Tepper’s class did. Does that mean that Tepper isn’t interested in people from humanities backgrounds? No! It means that any applicant from a humanities background had better demonstrate their facility with complex analyses to prove capable of handling the challenging Tepper curriculum.

Tepper has only one required essay and one optional essay in its application:

Essay:

Imagine that you meet up with a member of the admission committee at an airport while on a layover. You have an opportunity to make a memorable impression. Use this essay to introduce yourself. Include any information that you believe is important for the committee member to know about you both professionally and personally. (Maximum 300-350 words, 12-point font, double-spaced)

350 words is a very short essay, approximately 3 paragraphs in length. Since the Tepper online application form contains a small section to discuss your career goals – the industry and function you are targeting and 150 words each about your target role and your plan B if that goal proves elusive – you do not need to address goals in this essay. Instead, strong answers to this essay prompt would include examples of situations in which you demonstrated the ambition and talent that Tepper is seeking in its MBA candidates. In addition, since Tepper’s class is so small, applicants who demonstrate their fit with a small, tight-knit community will pique their interest.

Optional Essay:
• Use this essay to convey important information that you may not have been otherwise able to convey. This may include unexplained resume gaps, context for recommender selection, etc.

• If you are a re-applicant, explain how your candidacy has strengthened since your last application.

With only one required essay of 350 words, I highly recommend using this space to share more about your background. You can use this essay to demonstrate your potential or experience in a particular field or even to share an example of your analytical and leadership skills.

Re: CMU Tepper MBA Admissions and Related Blogs [#permalink]
Hey everybody! We’re back with another installment of “Ask the AdCom,” where we share a wide range of tips and advice from admissions team members from a dozen top business schools. Since AdCom members are human, too, we know our readers will enjoy seeing  a different side of what makes these guys tick.

This fun space is not really about the application process but more about real-life topics, like what’s a good book to readbest place to study, where you can find a killer meal near campus, and all the fun stuff happening at b-school that creates those lifelong, cherished memories for MBA students.

We hope you become inspired, too!
Today’s question is: Tell us about a popular annual activity on campus.

Virginie Fougea, Associate Director of Admissions at INSEAD, says: National Weeks. With more than 70 nationalities represented on our campuses, everyone is a minority at INSEAD. National weeks are events that set the INSEAD MBA experience apart from other business schools; it is the celebration of diversity.

Ten times a year, students from various countries showcase their cultural traditions to the class during a week-long celebration (food, traditional costumes, music, etc.). National Weeks happen simultaneously in Fontainebleau and Singapore.

Judi Byers, Executive Director of Admissions and Financial Aid at Cornell’s Johnson Graduate School of Management, asked her students to share their favorites:
  • Peter Su, MBA ’17: Spring Formal
  • Sydney Chernish, MBA ’16: Some of our most entertaining events include Diwali, a variety show put on by the South Asian Business Club. Another is the annual Charity Auction, which raises thousands of dollars for local charities and brings out donations and bids from faculty, staff, students, and partners.
  • Najeen Riazi, MBA ’17: SO MANY.  Carnivale. Holi. Slope Day and Battle of the Brands.G
  • Daniel Greenhaw, MBA ’16: Slope Day
Rodrigo Malta, Director of Admissions at UT McCombs School of Business, says: Texas MBA International NightEach year the International MBA Student Association (IMBASA) and the Texas MBA+ Leadership Program host the largest MBA event of the year, International Night.

With almost 1,000 attendees, this event gives MBAs from all over the world an opportunity to open the doors to their culture for their classmates with a night of food, dancing, traditional games and entertainment. The evening is a multicultural celebration featuring an exciting blend of representatives from more than 20 countries. The popular event gives MBAs an opportunity to take a break from their academic rigors and discover the diversity of McCombs.

Also, Texas MBA @ SXSW: Every year, McCombs hosts a booth at SXSW Interactive and our annual McCombs E-Ship Night at this great event.  This is just another way for our alumni, current students and the Austin/tech community to connect and learn more about start ups from McCombs alumni.

Shari Hubert, Associate Dean of MBA Admissions at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business, says:
  • International Student Festival – Our MBA students host an event that celebrates the many cultures found within our student body with a day of culture, dance, and food.
  • McDonough Cup – MBA cohorts compete against one another in a weeklong series of competitions, ranging from a scavenger hunt to a cookoff to sports. The winner earns their place on the coveted McDonough Cup trophy.
  • McDonough Sippy Cup – Launched last year, this event celebrates the many families with small children within our MBA program.

Morgan Bernstein, Executive Director of Full-Time MBA Admissions at UC Berkeley-Haas School of Business, says: Some of the most popular events among our students include the annual Haas Gala in San Francisco, the Haas Talent Show which showcases the musical talent of our Dean (as well as the hidden talents of our students!); and the Dean’s Scotch Tasting fundraiser, which calls on our favorite faculty and staff to guest bartend for the evening for a good cause. From an admissions perspective, we always look forward to Days at Haas, when we get to meet our newly-admitted students and their partners.

John Roeder, Assistant Dean Graduate Admissions at SMU Cox School of Business, says: Each spring, the Cox Business Leadership Center’s Nonprofit Consulting Program pairs 35 MBA students with one of four local nonprofit organizations. Student teams work over a six-week period researching and benchmarking, gathering and analyzing data, and ultimately generating plans to solve core business challenges. At the conclusion of the program, students present these plans to staff and board members at each of the organizations.

Kelly R. Wilson, Executive Director of Admissions at CMU Tepper School of Business, says: Student-lead Global Treks often provide social networking opportunities with students, local executives, alumni and faculty. Recent Global Trek regions include: China, Dubai, Japan, India, Israel, Peru, South Africa and Morocco.

Melissa Fogerty, Director of Admissions  at Yale School of Management, says:  At Yale SOM, we host an annual celebration of our community’s cultural diversity called International Week. During this week, students enjoy global food at International Food Fest, and participate in #OneSOM activities like Global Trivia, What Not to Do in a Business Setting, and Travel Etiquette.

Isser Gallogly, Assistant Dean of MBA Admissions at NYU Stern School of Business, says: Each spring, Stern’s student government hosts “International Passport Day” — students share their country’s unique heritage through cuisine, costumes and performances in a festival on Gould Plaza.
*****
Look out for the #AskAdCom in our social media channels, and we’ll see you again next week when we check in to Ask the AdCom who are the “must meet” professors.

FROM CMU Tepper MBA Admission Blog: Round Four Application Deadline
I hope this post will get the attention of those of you who have been diligently working over the past months to be ready to submit your application for the final round of admissions at the Tepper School.

Planning to submit your application by April 23? If so, we will make sure you will receive an email on May 24 with the Admission Committee’s admission decision.

While we may offer rolling admission through early summer, Round Four is our last, guaranteed application round, so you won’t want to wait!

A tip to get you started: Begin by reading the application instructions.

Of special note is our move to one essay this year. What makes it interesting is that it is a fairly open-ended essay and we can’t wait to see what you tell us about yourselves!

Also, Carnegie Mellon was one of a number of schools that worked directly with the Graduate Management Admissions Council over the last year and a half to develop a Common Letter of Recommendation. We join a number of other top MBA programs in adopting the common questions in an effort to help lessen the burden for you and those you seek to write your recommendation for B-School.

Shortly after the application deadline, we will begin the first of several waves of interview invitations. Don’t sweat it if you aren’t among those who receive an early invitation. We need to start somewhere with the process, and literally conduct interviews up through a few days prior to the decision notification date. Keep checking your email!

Good luck with your applications!

Today is an exciting day! Not only have our first year students arrived and settled into the Tepper School, but our Fall 2018 application is live.

We love that the halls of the Tepper School are filling with students again. We also love the anticipation that a new application cycle brings.

Whether you know in what round you will apply or you are still thinking about your next steps, I’d like to encourage you to do a few things:

1. Visit the Tepper School. Our campus visit registration for Mini 1 is now available, so take some time to come and get to know us! If you are interested in our online hybrid format and would like to "attend’ a class," you can sign up to virtually attend as well.

2. Check out our class profiles. Wondering if there is a “typical” Tepper student profile we’d like to see? Take a look at an overview of our current students and you'll see that, for us, there is no such thing as typical!

3. Use our website as a resource. We’ve loaded the website with application tips – from providing the one required essay prompt to detailing more about the interview invitation process and providing detailed application instructions, our goal is to keep you informed!

As we continue to welcome new and returning Tepper students to campus, we also look forward to getting to know you over the next year. Keep in touch with our office and stay tuned for more blog updates throughout the year.

FROM CMU Tepper MBA Admission Blog: The Round One Application Deadline Is Almost Here!
Hello from India! While I am currently traveling to MBA Fairs, my mind is also on the next few months. My favorite season is here! The weather gets cooler (except, as I write this, it is currently 84 degrees in Pittsburgh) and football season has returned.

Really, though, I love this time of year because it’s almost round one. There is nothing like the buzz in the office about newly submitted applications and the sounds of our team interviewing and meeting prospective students. If you are planning to submit your application by October 4 for the round one deadline, make sure you’ve done these few things:

  • Read the application instructions! This is a comprehensive list of everything we need from you in order to ensure your application is complete and the Admissions Committee can begin their review. Of special note for this year: We have diploma and grading scale guides if you need a little extra help figuring out what we want.
  • Make sure your recommender knows the application deadline! Too often, applications can’t be forwarded for review because the recommender hasn’t yet submitted. Let your recommender know to circle October 4 on her/his calendar in red pen. While it is not required that they submit their recommendation prior to the deadline, your application will be help up until we receive it.
  • Proofread, proofread, proofread! You’ve got your transcripts ready to upload, your GMAT score has been sent to us and your recommender is ready to submit. Now, make sure you’ve proofread your essay (we only require one) and your career goals. You want to put your best, most proofread foot forward.
Shortly after the application deadline, we will begin to send the first of several waves of interview invitations. Don’t sweat it if you aren’t among those who receive an early invitation. We send interview invitations all the way until a few days prior to the decision notification date. Try to be patient and keep checking your email. (Even the junk mail folder.)

Good luck and we look forward to reading your application.

FROM CMU Tepper MBA Admission Blog: Beyond the Class Profile
Every year, after our team has read applications, interviewed candidates, connected candidates with current students and welcomed admitted folks to campus, I get the great task of greeting the incoming class and telling them a little more about themselves! It’s fun to see not only the diversity of academic and professional backgrounds, but the interesting tidbits, too. We collect these from conversations with applicants and information from applications.

A few of my favorites from this year include:

  • A pilot
  • Students who work with refugees
  • Someone who has been skydiving 37(!) times
  • Someone who volunteers as a clown for hospital visits
  • Several with a love of cooking
(I don’t want to make this post too long; otherwise, I’d include ALL of my favorites!)

I share these fun facts to show that we really love getting to know our students. (We’ll keep you posted if any of those aspiring chefs cook us up something delicious this year!) It is exciting to see the diverse backgrounds of our students.

I always marvel that there are students from 30 different countries and across the United States in the incoming class. The culture, traditions and heritage that our students bring with them really does enrich the experience. In fact, this past weekend, the class hosted a Tepper Cross Culture Potluck. Rumor has it there was a lot of amazing food eaten and friendships forged at the event.

Every year, I am truly impressed by the academic and professional achievements of our incoming class. That’s why we love digging deeper and learning more about our applicants. Would you like to get to know our students better? Use the Contact a Current Student feature on our website. They look forward to connecting with you and sharing their insights about the Tepper School and how they navigated the admissions process.

You can also check out the profiles of each incoming group: Full-Time, Part-Time On-Campus and Part-Time Online Hybrid students. Learn more about Tepper School students and ask yourself if you can see yourself being a part of next year’s dynamic class! I hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

FROM CMU Tepper MBA Admission Blog: Diversity Weekend is Quickly Approaching!
I can hardly believe I just wrote that sentence! Maybe it’s because I was away in India or because we had a busy summer, but suddenly it’s fall in Pittsburgh.

If you’ve had a chance to speak with any of us here in Admissions or any of our current students, I hope we’ve been able to share with you what a diverse community we are at the Tepper School.

We truly believe that a diverse student body, staff, and faculty all help to create a richer, more valuable experience for you. As planning is in full swing for our highly anticipated Diversity Weekend taking place November 3-5, I want to highlight some of what you can expect during these exciting few days. FROM CMU Tepper MBA Admission Blog: Diversity Weekend is Quickly Approaching!
I am excited to introduce to everyone a new series of blog posts that we’ll be starting this year! Tuesday Tips will be posted on certain Tuesdays throughout the year (go figure, right?!) and I’ll be sharing with you a wide range of tips.

From navigating the application process to acclimating to life in a new city and preparing to start an MBA program, Tuesday Tips will hopefully help calm some of your nerves, prepare you for a new chapter and get you excited for a potential life at the Tepper School.

This post of the inaugural Tuesday Tips is pretty relevant for where we are right now – interviewing! If you’ve applied in Round One or know someone who has, know that we extend invitations to interview all throughout the round – even up until a week or so before we release decisions. So, if you are invited to interview, here are some tips:

  • Be Yourself! There’s a reason you were invited to interview and we want that to show through. Be professional but also don’t be afraid to show your personality and be genuine with your interviewer.
  • Be Prepared! We don’t make our interviewing style a secret. Our behavioral style interview lets us learn more about your professional life and you should be prepared with succinct, relevant experiences to share. (P.S. Check out the STAR interview method – it will help you out!)
  • Be Patient! We know that as soon as you hit “submit” on your application, you are starting to wonder if you’ll be invited to interview. While it’s tempting to read message boards and speculate on the timing of invitations, I caution you to be patient. Be confident in the application you have submitted and the potential that the Admission committee will recognize.
While I could keep writing more tips about interviewing, I will stop so that I’m on time for my next meeting! If you’d like more tips, I’d recommend checking out one of our ApplicationWorkshops where we go into great detail about successfully interviewing (as well as submitting your application).

I’m excited to share moreTuesday Tips and look forward to sharing again soon!

FROM CMU Tepper MBA Admission Blog: Tuesday Tips: Interviewing Successfully!

FROM CMU Tepper MBA Admission Blog: Tepper Women Make Their Mark in the Tech Industry
Life at the Tepper School is starting to get very busy! While our Admissions team is fully focused on reviewing round one applications, our career counselors are busy supporting students who are completely immersed in the recruiting season. Whether it is first-year students just beginning the search for summer internships or second-year students considering full-time offers, the halls of Posner are abuzz with talk of recruitment – and lots of sharply-dressed MBA students!

As I think about where we are in the year, I’m reminded of an exciting Poets & Quants article that highlights the growing number of Tepper School women who pursue full-time employment in the tech industry. If you have a few minutes, I’d highly recommend this read!

Don’t have a few minutes to read the article? I’ll summarize some of the key points. These are the highlights related to the Tepper School:

  • 45 percent of our class of 2016 graduating women entered careers in tech (compared to 29 percent of our graduating men).
  • The number of Tepper men and women accepting jobs in tech has been pretty even since 2012. But women have been slowly pulling away from the men in accepting tech roles every year since 2012, and the boom in 2016 was the biggest we have seen.
  • Tepper women credit (among many reasons) their Bay Area career trek experience as a major driving force that propelled their interest in the tech industry. (You can learn more about Tepper career treks here.)
  • As the number of graduating women in tech continues to rise, so will the opportunities for prospective students to connect with them as an alumnae in the tech industry.
I hope you take time to read the article. I’m sure it will make you just as excited as I am about the success of Tepper women in the tech industry.

FROM CMU Tepper MBA Admission Blog: Tepper Talks: Coming to a city near you
Our fall recruitment travel is beginning to slow down, but one of my favorite events is still to come! In just a few short weeks (November 14, 15 and 16 to be exact), we will be hosting Tepper Talks in several major cities around the United States. I hope you have had the chance to learn about these events through our website or from an admissions officer you met on the road, but I’d also like to tell you more.

So, what are Tepper Talks? These intimate evenings provide you with a unique opportunity to learn more about the Tepper School’s dynamic community and curriculum. You’ll hear not just from admissions, but also our colleagues in our Career Opportunities Center and (what I suspect may be your favorite part) you’ll have the chance to learn about the experiences of and network with some of our dynamic alumni!

We try to visit all of the major geographic locations in the United States. This year we are headed to Philadelphia, Chicago and San Francisco — all on Tuesday, November 14. On Wednesday, November 15, we’ll be in New York, Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C. We will round out our travels in Boston on Thursday, November 16. Registration is currently still open (and is no cost to you!). Whether you live in or near the region or happen to be traveling there for the evening, we’d love to see you!

You may have attended an MBA fair in the past or spoken with an admissions officer, but these nights are a time when you will have the opportunity to hear about the program, speak about recruiting and connect all of the dots by meeting alumni, all at once! We hope you take this opportunity to engage in the Tepper School experience.

FROM CMU Tepper MBA Admission Blog: Tuesday Tips: Have a Good Plan B for Your Post-MBA Career Goals
Today’s tip has its origin in several conversations I’ve had with MBA candidates over the last few weeks.

As I travel to recruiting events and speak to many of you here on campus, I’m asked, “What is a tip you can give me when applying?” I really appreciate this question and am happy to provide some insight into how I normally respond.

Be flexible! We are pretty transparent in our application process. We want to know your immediate post-MBA goal as well as your Plan B. Why do we ask this? Not because we are testing you but because we want to know that you have thought through an optional path to career success.

We know you are excited about your Plan A and we want to help you achieve it; however, we also know that things happen outside of our control (think 2008 financial crisis), plans change and interests evolve. Recruiting starts on campus and suddenly you may be thinking, “I want to pursue a different path than I originally thought!”

Don’t spend so much time perfecting your immediate goals that you forget about the importance of a well-rounded Plan B. What goes into a good Plan B? Think through other functional areas or industries; if your Plan A is a bit of a reach, what might be an interim step to getting there? You’ll want to connect the dots to this alternative as well. Having both an immediate post-MBA goal and a solid Plan B will make the admission committee say, “Those both seem achievable and well thought out.”  And that will never be a bad thing.

Part of what we are looking for in your application is a little flexibility and a sense of what is realistic, given your background. Help us see that you’ve thought through your plan and that you also realize that a lot can happen in two years – especially at a place like Carnegie Mellon where you will be exposed to many new things you may have not yet imagined.

Remember, you will have career resources and leadership opportunities available that will, inevitably, shape your post-MBA plans a little differently than you had initially planned. And that’s okay with us!
