Hello,
I am hoping you can have a review over my profile and give me some advice. It would be highly appreciated. I am applying for MBA with entry term of 2017, and below is my information
GMAT: 710
Nationality: Vietnam
Gender: Male
Undergraduate:
Bachelor (Finance and Accounting) at University of Minnesota
GPA: 3.77
Work Experience:
Total 4.5 years by the time of matriculation, which comprise of the following:
1 year as internal consultant for Boston Scientific in the US for a transformation program (set up finance shared service model, working with offices in the US, Latin American country and India outsource center)
(Then back to Vietnam)
1 year at a large FMCG company working in another ERP and Finance system implementation projects
1 year as Senor Business Analyst of the internal strategy department at large banking institution in Vietnam
1.5 years as Business Intelligence team lead for an E-commerce corporation supporting 6 SEA countries
Extra activities:
Secretary and social committee leader of the Transfer Student Group in college
Participate in the employee event committee, hosting social events for colleagues at the bank that I worked at
Help out closeted LGBT youth in Vietnam to deal with their situation (there is no organization that I am involved with to do this; this is just me knowing individuals who are struggling with their identity and help them with my own experience)
Recommendation:
My boss at the bank I work with in Vietnam. He worked in New Zealand for 28 years holding various executive positions and was on his secondment in Vietnam when I worked for him.
My direct manager at the E-commerce company
Short-term goal: get into management consulting industry (MMB). This is also the reason why my working experience spans across various industries. I wanted to be exposed to various fields and functions to prepare myself for management consulting
Long-term goal: partner at a management firm specializing in banking industry or a strategy executive at an international bank
Not sure if top 10 or Ivy schools are out of my reach with scholarship, but these are the schools I am thinking of applying
Yale
Booth
UNC Kenan Flagler
Rotman Toronto
Schulich (Canada)
Questrom (Boston University)
U of Rochester Simon
If you can give me some advice, tell me if these schools are in my range and maybe suggest some more (better) options for me to consider, that would be highly appreciated!
Thanks a lot!
Hello hello!
Great to hear from you dude.
I think you have some excellent stuff in your profile. First of all, you are from Vietnam, which is not a common country for applicants. Your GMAT is very good and your GPA is stellar. And your US experience will also be highly appreciated.
Your main weaknesses might be the lack of brand name school/employer (as opposed to say people who come from MBB or bulge bracket banks), but it seems from here that your experience is very solid.
Where I see a lot of potential in terms of narrative - is how you want to transform Vietnam in the future. There's definitely a story to be woven there.
Other than that, I actually think that your school list could be more challenging than it is. I think Top 10 alone might be a bit hard (Although you could and should apply to 1-3 schools int he top 10), but that you should solidly fit within Top 20 at US schools if your essays and recommendations are stellar (which they will be
).
Since you want to go to MBB, it's better for you to make that extra effort to apply to more, higher-ranked schools, as they will usually place better at MBB. (But do look at placement stats at all top 20 schools).
I hope this help you overall, and feel free to write with any other questions,
Best,
JF
