I pick B.
C is obviously wrong.
Look at it : "In 1905 Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, traveling the back roads of Hungary armed only" ----> "armed" is in passive form , it must follow a to-be verb or "get" . In C, "armed" seems to support " Hungary"--->wrong!

Would a comma after Hungary help C become the better choice? Somehow B seems a little too wordy and awkward. But so does C.
I chose C!

I`m going against the grain here. C isn`t a choppy as B, yet conveys the same point. OA please

I choose C.
B seems to be too fragmented and doesn't sound good too.

I pick C.

(A) Traveling the back roads of Hungary, in 1905 Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, and they were armed only
>> No. Traveling the .... and they were. The beginning not related to the end (if that makes sense).

(B) In 1905, Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály, traveling the back roads of Hungary, began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, and they were only armed
>> No. Who began their pioneering?

(C) In 1905 Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, traveling the back roads of Hungary armed only
>>Yes. This makes sense start to finish.

(D) Having traveled the back roads of Hungary, in 1905 Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology; they were only armed
>> No. 99% of the time, any sentence beginning with 'Having' is wrong.

(E) Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály, in 1905 began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, traveling the back roads of Hungary, arming themselves only
>> No. Doesn't sound right.

I like B best. The other choices make modification errors.
