World War II, which resulted in the death of over 70 million individuals, proved to be the deadliest conflict in human history, claiming nearly twice as many lives than would be killed in World War I.
A. lives than would be killed in World War I
B. lives as would World War I
C. lives than those who were killed in World War I
D. lives than World War I
E. lives as World War I

since we see "as many" in the not-underlined part, we need "as many as" which is correct and idiomatic, so eliminate A,C,D

left with B, E
Bis wrong because it uses "would" as if world war 1 has not yet happened and will happen in future, so B is wrong.

Answer E

A. lives than would be killed in World War I
B. lives as would World War I
C. lives than those who were killed in World War I
D. lives than World War I
E. lives as World War I

Pl. explain in detail. thanks

Hello,

first of all, we cannot say " would", because it really happened. So A and B are out.

I would first look for a "twice as many X as Y" construction. E has this one, so this is my answer. It is still awkward to me because we are comparing "lives" with "WWI"
But, it is still the best answer.

A) lives than would be killed in World War I
B) lives as would World War I
C) lives than those who were killed in World War I
D) lives than World War I
E) lives as World War I

1) Currect usage is "as many as" not "as many than" -> A, C, D are wrong
2) Use of would is wrong after "as", as there is no uncertainty/ imaginary scenario. Word War I has already claimed lives, not would claim lives.

First thing to note here is that when using a comparison with the word 'as', than cannot be used to complete the comparison. We need to use to complete it. This understanding itself eliminates options A, C and D.

Next, WW I happened before WW II. Hence, we cannot use would in this sentence because would conveys a hypothetical situation. Total lives killed in WW I is a fact and not a hypothetical situation. This eliminates option B.

Hence, correct option is E.

A. lives than would be killed in World War I

B. lives as would World War I

C. lives than those who were killed in World War I

D. lives than World War I

E. lives as World War I

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

There are two main problems with the original sentence.

(1) The original sentence contains an improper idiom. The idiom as many x than is not idiomatically correct and should be replaced by the idiomatically correct phrase as many x as.

(2) would be killed in World War I is illogical as it is in the future tense, implying that World War I occurred after World War II. The phrase could be made significantly more concise using as many lives as World War I. The words would be killed in or were killed in are not necessary and should be omitted.

A. The idiom as many ... than is incorrect; the use of the future tense causes the sentence to illogically imply that World War I occurred after World War II
B. The use of the future tense causes the sentence to illogically imply that World War I occurred after World War II
C. The idiom as many ... than is incorrect; those who were killed in is awkward and unnecessary
D. The idiom as many ... than is incorrect
E. The correct idiom is used (as many ... as); the sentence correctly implies that World War II occurred after World War I; the unnecessary phrase were killed in is omitted
