Significant Promotion 2 Week Before Round 2 Apps!

Significant Promotion 2 Week Before Round 2 Apps! [#permalink] New post   14 Dec 2012, 08:48
How should I handle this situation? I mean it's great news for me, the promotion is away from my technical engineering role and into a more general management job, I'll now have direct reports - which is exactly what I want from my MBA.

However, my "current supervisor" is now out of date, which throws a curveball for my recommendations and all my essays that are 90% complete would now be talking about my previous job.

Any advice is welcome, thanks.

First off, congrats!

Your new supervisor won't have the time (and possibly the knowledge) to write you a good recommendation. Don't worry about this aspect.

I would say just be sure to update your resume to include the recent promotion and maybe even call it out in the optional section. You an explain that the promotion has moved you more toward the role you're looking for (and explain why this is what you want!) and that you decided to keep with your current recommender because s/he knows you best. You might instead modify the "Why MBA" essay to include the recent promotion and how it furthers your goals. Let's be honest, your previous job is for all intents and purposes your current job. They won't ding you on a technicality.

Do you even want to go for MBA now? to leave your job for 2 years? you should decide it first before moving forward. If you don't have time to fix your application, you can send it like it is and in the worst case you'll get rejected but still have this great job at your hands.

Stick with what you have right now. Put a quick 2-3 sentence note about your promotion. Frankly, your new supervisor probably doesn't know much about you, and since you are new to this position, you probably don't have anything particularly insightful to say about it.

I would write admissions a short email/letter stating that you recently received a significant promotion (state what it is and what your new responsiblities are). Also, you should reiterate why you want to pursue an MBA degree at this stage of your development and why this school is the ideal place for you to attend. This email should not be longer than one or two paragraphs -- needs to be direct and to the point. Do not submit a thesis on this matter and include a detailed description of your new job, how you feel about being promoted, defend getting an MBA degree, etc.
